FIFA Publishes Report on Ten Years of International Transfers

  • USD 48.5 billion spent on transfer fees over the past decade
  • 200 FIFA member associations involved in international transfers
  • Top 30 clubs in terms of transfer fee spend are European

Zurich, Switzerland (September 1, 2021) – FIFA has published a report on international transfers in the men’s game during the 2011-2020 period, the most comprehensive review of transfers across the globe ever produced.

The report confirms that transfer market activity increased steadily over the past decade.

Pollard Banner

From 11,890 transfers conducted in 2011 to a peak of 18,079 in 2019, a total of 133,225 international transfers and loans of professional players took place, while USD 48.5 billion was spent on transfer fees during the period.

200 FIFA member associations involved

The transfers involved 66,789 players and 8,264 clubs across 200 FIFA member associations, thus underlining football’s role in the global economy. Brazilian nationals moving to foreign clubs topped the list with 15,128 transfers, followed by Argentinian (7,444), British (5,523), French (5,027) and Colombian footballers (4,287).

European clubs lead transfer fee spend

During the last decade, the number of clubs conducting international transfers grew by more than 30%, from 3,167 in 2011 to a peak of 4,139 in 2019. The list of top 30 clubs in terms of transfer fee spend was made up solely of European clubs: England (12 clubs), Spain and Italy (five each), Germany (three), France and Portugal (two each), and Russia (one).

Those 30 clubs alone spent a total of USD 22.8 billion on transfer fees, representing 47% of the global total over the decade.

Increased agents’ commissions

As identified by FIFA in its ongoing reform of the transfer system, the report also confirms a sharp decline in solidarity contributions, with the 2020 amount (USD 38.5 million) mirroring that of 2011 (USD 38.0 million). This trend reinforces the need for the FIFA Clearing House, which FIFA expects to help enforce training compensation and solidarity payments up to an amount of approximately USD 300 million per year.

The decline in training compensation payments is in stark contrast to the amount of commissions paid to agents, which increased from USD 131.1 million in 2011 to USD 640.5 million in 2019. A total of USD 3.5 billion was paid for agents’ commissions in international transfers over the course of the decade.

The report on ten years of international transfers is available here and on

New Game Lets North Carolinians win a BIGGER SPIN for $2 million

RALEIGH, NC (September 6, 2021) – A new game from the North Carolina Education Lottery begins with a scratch-off ticket and ends with a ‘BIGGER SPIN’ of a giant prize wheel to win up to $2 million.

The BIGGER SPIN scratch-off ticket officially launches Tuesday. The $2 million prize is four times bigger than the prize offered in the BIG SPIN game two years ago.

If players win a BIGGER SPIN, they get to take part in a live event by spinning a prize wheel. The six North Carolinians who spin the wheel are guaranteed to win at least $400,000, but could win the $2 million.

“We’re taking the thrill of winning to a bigger level,” Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery said. “On top of winning an instant big prize, our players are getting a once-in-a-lifetime experience of a live event where they try their luck and could win even more.”

The lottery will host the first BIGGER SPIN event on Facebook Live. At the event, before the winner takes a turn on the prize wheel, Facebook Live viewers can comment on a live stream for a chance to win a pack of $10 Bigger Spin scratch-offs of their own.

In all, the game offers six BIGGER SPIN top prizes. Five people will win their turn at the prize instantly on their scratch-off and a sixth will get a turn as a grand prize in a second-chance drawing. All BIGGER SPIN tickets can be entered into the drawing.

The game also offers bigger prizes than those that could be won instantly previously, including five $200,000 instant prizes -- twice as much as before -- and others ranging from $10 to $50,000.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have helped all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

The partnership secures broader payment options for consumers and increases customer engagement and footfall, giving a boost after the pandemic to the leisure and gaming sectors. The OKTO app includes a secure Know Your Customer (KYC) process along with age verification and also provides facilities for consumers to enable transaction limits and time-out breaks.

Meeting all the niche demands of the leisure and gaming sectors and their users, the OKTO.WALLET platform allows pubgoers to move funds instantly across the entire payment ecosystem via the open and interconnected OKTO mobile app that can be used in all touchpoints of the venue and beyond through the OKTO Prepaid Mastercard® linked to the users’ OKTO wallet account.

The solution will be launched with Inspired’s key Pub retail partners in September and will be available on Inspired’s latest range of Category C gaming products.

Simon Dorsen, Director of Gaming at OKTO, said: “Inspired is a major supplier to the UK Pub and Gaming sector and this collaboration along with other recently announced partners in the sector, strengthens OKTO’s position as the go to mobile payments app for consumers and operators in the leisure sector.

Digital payments for F&B sales are surging in pubs due to the pandemic accelerating changing habits, and now OKTO enables pubs to extend and satisfy their customers’ desire for digital payments also at the gaming machines.

Our easy-to-use solution allows players to go simply to a gaming machine, press a button to use OKTO, and deposit funds to start playing. And it is the same in the cashout; they get the winnings back to the OKTO wallet in real-time. Alongside, we can also onboard pubs as merchants, if OKTO users can spend some money on food and drink in the pub, they simply can, and they can also split the bill with their friends or send and receive money from their friends using simply the OKTO app.”

Peter Davies, Managing Director of the Leisure business at Inspired, commented: “From our initial introduction to OKTO we were extremely impressed by the breadth of knowledge and experience of cashless payment solutions demonstrated by the OKTO team. Their understanding and practical knowledge of the gaming sector in particular have allowed them to develop a mobile payment solution that fits perfectly into our product offer.

In particular the focus on player protection and social responsibility stood out, together with the simplicity of the solution itself. We are delighted to be working in close collaboration with OKTO and are looking forward to rolling the solution out in conjunction with our customers and offering machine players a safe, secure and feature rich alternative to cash.”
