State Bee is the Star of Bee Lucky Scratch Ticket

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (April 6, 2021) – Pollinators like the rusty patched bumble bee help support Minnesota’s environment and economy. That’s why the Minnesota Lottery has created a very special scratch ticket with help from our friends at the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board.

Bee Lucky

Bee Lucky scratch tickets—starring Minnesota’s state bee, the rusty patched bumble bee — land in retailers across Minnesota on April 6. Each ticket is $2. Players have a chance to win up to $10,000 instantly.

In addition to featuring one of Minnesota’s most buzz-worthy pollinators, Bee Lucky scratch tickets include a special “Bee Informed” box. Players scratch the Bee Informed box to reveal facts about Minnesota’s pollinators.

“The Environmental Quality Board is excited to collaborate with the Minnesota Lottery to produce the Bee Lucky scratch ticket,” said Katie Pratt, EQB Executive Director. “This ticket will raise awareness about Minnesota’s state bee—the endangered rusty patched bumble bee—and generate lottery proceeds that support environmental projects including improving pollinator habitat. While Minnesota is making progress on pollinator protection, it will take all of us to protect our state bee and other imperiled pollinators.”

The rusty patched bumble bee became Minnesota’s state bee in 2019. The rusty patched bumble bee has been listed as federally endangered since 2017.

EGBA Welcomes Introduction of Netherlands Online Gambling Regulations

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (April 1, 2021) -- The introduction of the Remote Gambling Act in the Netherlands means almost all EU countries now have a multi-licensing system for regulating online gambling.

Brussels, today – Online gambling will finally be regulated in the Netherlands after the country’s long-awaited Remote Gambling Act came into force today. The legislation introduces a range of new regulations and a multi-licensing system to allow different private companies to offer online gambling in the country. The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) welcomes the country’s introduction of an online gambling regulation and the accompanying multi-licensing system.

Until today, the Netherlands had remained one of a few EU countries which had not yet introduced regulations for online gambling.  The introduction of the Remote Gambling Act brings the Netherlands into line with other EU countries and means almost all EU countries now have a multi-licensing system for regulating online gambling.

Advertisement
JUMBO

Potential license holders are now able to submit their license applications to Kansspeelautoriteit, the Dutch Gambling Authority, ahead of the official market opening on 1 October. It has been reported that the Kansspeelautoriteit expects to grant 35 licenses initially.

Significant achievement

The Remote Gambling Act is a significant achievement and EGBA acknowledges the efforts of Dutch policymakers, the Kansspeelautoritei, and the Netherlands Online Gambling Association (NOGA), towards establishing the new regulations. EGBA is pleased that the new regulations focus on achieving a high-level of consumer protection and acknowledge the consumer-centric nature of online gambling by allowing a broad scope of online gambling products.

But significant concerns remain…

A significantly concerning element of the new regulation is its objective to achieve 80% channelisation of the newly regulated market within 3 years, meaning that it intends to leave 20% of Dutch players to gamble in the unlicensed market. EGBA believes the country’s channelisation ambition should be strengthened to support the effectiveness of the new regulation – similar to, for instance, Denmark, where well over 90% of players play on licensed websites. The risks to channelisation have been recently illustrated by a recent survey commissioned by NOGA, which highlighted that as many as 41% of Dutch online gamblers do not care or have no preference if the gambling website they use is licensed. EGBA therefore urges the Dutch authorities to assess the effectiveness of the new legislation in achieving a more ambitious level of channelisation and adopt measures accordingly.

“We welcome the introduction of online gambling regulation in the Netherlands. Almost all EU countries now have a multi-licensing system for regulating online gambling. But the real winner here will be the Dutch player who will now have much greater choice and protection under Dutch laws. In this respect, we still have significant concerns about the channelisation ambitions of the Dutch authorities. For the new legislation to be effective it needs to aim to reach more players than currently foreseen.” – Maarten Haijer, Secretary General, European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA).

Nebraska Lottery Generates Record Amount for Beneficiaries

LINCOLN, NE (April 2, 2021) – Strong ticket sales and a billion-dollar Mega Millions jackpot run resulted in the largest amount of proceeds transferred to the Nebraska Lottery’s beneficiary funds since the Lottery was established in 1993.

A total of $15,201,537, derived from a share of Scratch and Lotto ticket sales from the previous three months, was distributed the week of April 2 among the beneficiaries in the following manner:

  • Nebraska Education Improvement Fund: $6,764,684;
  • Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund: $6,764,684;
  • Nebraska State Fair Support and Improvement Fund: $1,520,154; and
  • Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund: $152,015.

The latest transfer exceeded the previous record of $14,484,483 transferred in March 2016. A total of $818,993,865 in proceeds has been distributed since the Nebraska Lottery began operation on September 11, 1993.

Nebraska Lottery Director Brian Rockey attributes the historic transfer amount to strong sales of Mega Millions and Powerball tickets during the quarter. “Mega Millions and Powerball started 2021 with record jackpots, including a $731.1 million Powerball jackpot for the January 20 drawing and a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot for the January 22 draw,” said Rockey. “Ticket sales for both games, in addition to continued growth in Scratch ticket sales, resulted in this unprecedented quarterly transfer to our beneficiary funds. We’re proud of our continuing mission of helping our beneficiaries build a better Nebraska with lottery proceeds.”

The increased transfer amount will have a direct impact in Nebraska. Projects funded with lottery proceeds range from critical habitat protection for wildlife and grants to Nebraska college students to enhancements to facilities at the Nebraska State Fair and assistance for problem gamblers.

Amendment 4 passed by Nebraska voters in November of 2004 established the following distribution formula: Education as directed by the Legislature (44.5 percent) - currently distributed to the Nebraska Education Improvement Fund; Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund (44.5 percent); Nebraska State Fair (10 percent); and the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund (1 percent, plus the first $500,000 in fund proceeds each fiscal year).

Criteria for proceeds distribution are established by the beneficiary funds in accordance with legislative mandates. Every county in Nebraska has received service through grants funded with Nebraska Lottery proceeds.

The Nebraska Lottery marked $3 billion in total sales (since 1993) in June 2019. Sales for fiscal year 2020 totaled $183 million. Visit the Nebraska Lottery website, nelottery.com, for more information.
