CAIXA Lotteries Raise R$17.1 Billion in 2020

Result is the best in the history of Lotteries

Caxia Banner

BRAZIL (January 29, 2021) -- The CAIXA Lotteries registered record numbers in 2020, with a collection of R$17.1 billion in bets. The result is the best ever recorded in history and represents a growth of 2.35% in relation to sales in 2019, when the collection was R $ 16.7 billion, a previous record.

The year 2020 was also the year in which the most prizes were distributed, breaking the record of prizes offered in 2019 by 5%: more than R$5.9 billion in prizes to more than 300.8 million winning bets, in all the award ranges and in all lottery modalities. In addition, R$8.05 billion was transferred to priority areas in the country, such as Health, Education, Security, Sports, among others, which is the largest transfer ever made by CAIXA Lotteries in its entire history.

Once again, Mega-Sena was the main modality of CAIXA Lotteries in sales, responsible for the highest percentage of collection, corresponding to 40.4% of the total collected, that is, more than R$6.9 billion.

Next is Lotofácil, which recorded the highest growth in sales, of the order of 19% compared to 2019, responsible for R $ 5.2 billion and a 30.5% share in the CAIXA game portfolio. Third, with a 17.4% share, follows Quina, which raised more than R3.0 billion.

Credibility and social relevance:

In the year in which CAIXA Lotteries completed 58 years of history, the amounts collected, social transfers and prizes paid consolidate the relevance and the important social role of Lotteries in Brazil, which, in addition to being a fundamental part in the growth and maintenance strategy of the country's public policies, make it possible for gamblers' dreams to come true, through millionaire prizes.

The credibility and smoothness of CAIXA Lottery operations are internationally recognized. In 2020, there was a Level 3 recertification in Responsible Gambling, granted by the World Lottery Association (WLA), showing that CAIXA is in line with the best governance practices adopted by state lotteries in the world with regard to the protection of bettors and reduction of potential damage associated with the lottery games market.

Even with the impacts on the collection, which occurred as of March, it was possible to verify, from the 3rd quarter of 2020, the results of the rapid adaptation of the CAIXA Lotteries to the context of the pandemic.

In response to the impacts of COVID-19, among the measures and actions adopted throughout the year, we highlight the changes in Lotofácil, which started to have daily drawings, the launch of the new lottery called Super Sete and the availability of the App Loterias CAIXA also for users of the Android operating system.

These and other actions contributed to the increase in revenue from the sale of Lotteries:

Social transfers:

Of the total collected by the Federal Lotteries, a percentage is destined to the beneficiaries provided for in Law. With the gradual resumption of sales and the strengthening of prizes and special contests, CAIXA Lotteries accelerated their results, which allowed the generation of even more resources to the lottery beneficiaries. .

In 2020, the amounts transferred to the social beneficiaries were also a record and reached a total of R $ 8.05 billion, an amount 1.58% higher than the amount transferred in 2019. These funds are transferred by the Lotteries to be applied in areas such as sports, culture, social security, health and safety, among others.

Caxia Table

Special contests:

In 2020, four special contests were held: Easter duo, Quina de São João, Lotofácil da Independência and Mega da Virada.

In the four contests, more than R $ 633.5 million in prizes were offered in the main range. The sale of the four special contests in 2020 totaled more than R $ 1.8 billion, 17.5% more than the 2019 editions. The 2020 performance generated more than R $ 869 million in social transfers.

Highlight for the biggest CAIXA Lottery contest, Mega da Virada, which celebrated its 12th edition with historical numbers: a main prize of R $ 325.2 million was offered for two winning bets, which each received R $ 162, 6 million. This was the biggest prize in the history of Lotteries CAIXA, which also registered a record collection, surpassing R $ 1.17 billion, 14.26% above the previous record in the 2019 edition.

Second Quarter Louisiana Lottery Transfers Up $13.2 Million From Last Year

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (February 1, 2021) – For the second quarter of fiscal year 2021, the Louisiana Lottery Corporation transferred nearly $47 million to the state treasury, bringing total year-to-date contributions to over $94.7 million. This represents an increase of more than $13.2 million from the first two quarters of fiscal year 2020 and exceeds budgeted transfers by more than $15.6 million.

“Sales for the second quarter of this fiscal year were strong due to high demand for our scratch-off games and phenomenal growth of our daily numbers games Pick 3 and Pick 4,” said Lottery President Rose Hudson.

“Ending out December, monthly sales have eclipsed $40 million for the 10th consecutive month, the longest streak in our history.”

With revenue of $138,796,982, the Lottery’s total second-quarter state transfers were $46,685,930 or 33.6%. Since the Lottery began operations in 1991, it has brought in more than $11.3 billion in revenue and transferred over $4 billion to the state treasury.

In fiscal year 2021, the Lottery began adjusting scratch-off game prize structures, increasing prize payouts and adding more of the higher price-point games that have grown in popularity.

That strategy has paid off nicely so far, resulting in net gains for the state.

Local businesses who sell Lottery tickets also saw their compensation increase for the second quarter of the fiscal year. Retailer commission, incentives for cashing winning tickets and bonuses for selling winning tickets totaled more than $7.8 million for October through December of 2020.

Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age. Anyone with a gambling problem, or friends of anyone with a gambling problem, is encouraged to call toll-free 1-877-770-7867 for assistance.

For security purposes, players should sign the back of their tickets after purchasing.

Loto-Québec Launches a Lottery Ticket Made from 100% Recycled Materials

MONTRÉAL, Quebec (January 22, 2021) — Loto-Québec has just launched the first-ever lottery ticket printed on entirely recycled materials. With its Évasion scratch ticket, it becomes the first lottery corporation in the world to implement an environmental initiative of this kind.

Schafer Systems Inc.

Post-consumer recycled content is an offshoot of the circular economy. It’s designed with recycled materials that have served their primary purpose and can be recycled once again. In fact, many of Loto-Québec’s products are made in part with post-consumer products.

As part of its commitment to social responsibility, Loto-Québec even went one step further—by creating a scratch ticket with the smallest environmental footprint in the industry. The Corporation also intends to launch other green products in coming months, including the Code secret scratch ticket, also made from 100% recycled materials.

Furthermore, all Loto-Québec lottery tickets are recyclable.

Green products

In creating scratch tickets on a greener medium, Loto-Québec wanted to further reduce its environmental footprint by promoting the local economy. To do so, the Corporation called on two partners based in Québec.

The games are produced with environmentally friendly, water-based inks at Scientific Games’ highly secure Montréal instant game manufacturing facility. As for the recycled materials, it is produced by Rolland, an eco-friendly printing paper supplier located in Saint-Jérôme.

A reminder that the majority of Loto-Québec scratch tickets are FSC-certified. FSC labels deliver a guarantee to consumers that the products they buy support responsible forest management, and that the products are handled correctly at every stage of production – from forest to shelf.

BCLC Supports Legalization of Single-Event Sports Betting

B.C. Canada (February 1, 2021) -- BCLC is urging Ottawa to pass proposed legislation, known as Bill C-13, to allow Canadians to make single-event sports bets.

“Our players have wanted single-event sports betting for a long time. For example, this weekend is the Super Bowl and our players want to be able to simply bet on the winner, which they are unable to do under the current legislation,” says Stewart Groumoutis, BCLC’s director of eGaming. “We’re encouraging the federal government to modernize laws so we can provide single-event betting to our players and generate additional revenue to support provincial programs.”

Online at, the only regulated gambling website in B.C., legalized single-event betting would quickly create a new suite of sports-betting opportunities that players currently access on websites operating illegally in B.C. currently captures more than two-thirds of B.C.’s online gambling market, demonstrating a clear preference of players to use a regulated website with strong player health, integrity and security safeguards.

In the longer term, in land-based casinos and community gaming centres, BCLC would work with industry, regulator and government partners to introduce licensed sportsbooks in key markets. Additionally, BCLC would consider enhanced sports-betting offerings at hospitality locations across B.C. that sell lottery products. For example, players would be able to place a bet on the Canucks game outcome, and follow along while at their local bar or pub.

BCLC expects single-event sports betting would generate an estimated $125 to $175 million in additional revenue through online and land-based opportunities.

Currently, B.C. players are only able to place single-event sports bets by going across the border to Washington State casinos, or on unregulated off-shore websites. If single-event sports betting is legalized, BCLC can shift this play to B.C. casinos and, where the health of players is prioritized and where revenue helps support provincial initiatives such as healthcare, education and community programs. is the only online gambling website in North America and one of the few in the world with dedicated player-health specialists available via telephone and online chat to support players with healthy play habits or refer them to treatment and support services, if needed. These specialists are also available in every B.C. casinos and community gaming centre, where they are known as GameSense Advisors.

In fiscal year 2019/20, thanks to players, BCLC generated $1.3 billion in net income for the Province of B.C., which helps support education, community programs and healthcare.

ONCE: The Impact of Advertising in Relation to Gambling

An evaluation of the addictive capacity of gambling, taking a predominantly clinical approach, is the subject of the winning project in the latest edition of the “ONCE International Responsible Gaming Competition” (Certamen Internacional de Juego Responsable de la ONCE).

The director general of ONCE, Ángel Sánchez, presents the winner of the fourth International Responsible Gaming Competition to Dr. Marta Sancho Navarro, of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Sancho and a team of researchers submitted the winning paper titled, Impact of advertising according to game type, sociodemographic factors and associated psychopathology

SPAIN (January 29, 2021) -- In recent years, ONCE has adopted a new biennial competition format to fulfil the “Research” requirement for responsible gaming certification through the European Lotteries. The aim of this requirement is to promote research into the factors that facilitate the appearance of risk behavior, in order to reduce, as far as possible, the potential negative impact that gambling can have on a very small sector of consumers.

In this fourth and latest edition of the competition, the winning paper was titled Impact of advertising according to game type, sociodemographic factors and associated psychopathology, presented by a team of researchers led by Dr. Marta Sancho from Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona). The paper analyzes the impact of gambling-related advertising on both persons with a gambling addiction (clinical sample), and persons without any such addiction (sample of the general public). The study included a total of 220 participants, 89 with a gambling addiction and 131 without. All participants were evaluated through questionnaires on gambling issues, other associated symptoms (anxiety or depression) and personality, and through a computer test to evaluate attention bias towards gambling-related stimuli, such as advertising.

Lottery Insights December Issue
Click here for the latest electronic version of Lottery Insights.

The results gave rise to some noteworthy conclusions. The clinical sample showed greater interest in gaming machines, sports betting, and roulette compared to the general public sample, while the general public sample’s interest in lotteries was greater. Additionally, the clinical sample showed a greater vulnerability to the impact of gambling-related advertising, which increased in line with the seriousness of the gambling behavior. Furthermore, the study revealed that young people were more vulnerable to the impact of gambling-related advertising; increasing their interest in gambling, inducing a more pro-gambling attitude in them, and increasing their knowledge of gambling providers, especially in relation to online gambling sites.

In previous editions of the competition, studies focused on promoting research into variables that make it possible for behavioral alterations to occur in relation to gambling from different perspectives (2011) and developing an online expert system for identifying and intervening in gambling problems (2013). The third and fourth editions of the competition concentrated on evaluating the addictive capacity of games of chance.

The first winning paper, titled Factors that facilitate pathological addictive gambling behaviors in young people and adolescents, was presented by a team of researchers led by Dr. Ana Estévez, of Deusto University, Bilbao, Spain. The ultimate aim was to identify, relate and establish a relational map of the risk factors inherent in gambling that can activate the psychosocial processes that underlie addiction.

In the second edition, the winning project was titled, Development of an on-line expert system for identifying and intervening in gambling problems, presented by Dr. Francisco Labrador, who led a team from the psychology faculty from the Complutense University, Madrid, Spain. The aim of the study was to develop an online system for identifying and intervening in gambling problems. This system has been used by ONCE to improve its product design tool, providing an instrument for greater control over the risk impact of its products.

Another paper presented by Dr. Ana Estévez of Deusto University received an award in the third competition. The study was titled, Influence of commercial advertising on the risk behavior of adolescents in sports betting: Guide for regulators, operators, institutions and the media. The study measured the influence of commercial advertising on young people’s behavior in sports betting. Its findings highlight the responsibility of companies in the gambling sector, in designing advertising and marketing strategies that do not instigate gambling addiction.

ONCE’s commitment to responsible gaming and consumer protection is continuous and remains a top priority. The organization was the first operator in Spain to incorporate the responsible gaming standards established by the World Lottery Association and the European Lottery Association. The results of the winning studies in the various editions of the international competition are reported to the Spanish community, and particularly into the environments where they could be most useful when investigating, preventing or treating gambling-related pathology and problems. ONCE’s commitment to responsible gaming is materialized not only through this competition, but also through numerous measures implemented to protect consumers and its own employees. The competition is just one of many measures within ONCE’s commitment to research, responsible gaming and consumer protection.
