Kentucky Lottery Sales Grow As Fiscal Year Nears End

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (June 25, 2018) -- In Friday’s meeting of the Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s board of directors, it was announced that sales continue to perform ahead of expectations in the final weeks of Fiscal Year 2018.

Year-to-date sales through the end of May 2018 were $956.8 million, which is 4.7% ($42.7 million) ahead of the previous FY and .9% ($8.8 million) ahead of budget. Several large Mega Millions runs have helped that game show the highest increase of any product, up 38.4% ($10.1 million) from the previous year.

Scratch-off sales continue to be the dominant force, accounting for $560.8 million in sales for the period.

This is 1.7% ($9.3 million) more than the same period last year, but 1.6% ($8.8 million) below budget.

According to Vice President of Finance and Administration Rick Kelley, sales since March have been crucial in these gains. “New strategies for Scratch-off tickets, offering Keno online via our mobile app, and solid jackpot performance in both Powerball and Mega Millions have been the boost,” he said.

The board also approved the Lottery’s budget for FY19. Executive Vice President & CFO Howard B. Kline presented a plan that calls for an overall 9% sales increase, which would set the sales goal at $1.13 billion. Income before transfer of dividends is budgeted to be $269.8 million.

It’s a very aggressive budget, calling for increases such as a 10% jump in our Scratch-off sales,” said Kline. “We feel a number of new sales initiatives though will help us meet this goal.”

Both this year and next, those increased Scratch-off sales are making a big impact,” said Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Tom Delacenserie. “We listened to players and made changes in prize structures to which they’re responding. We also changed our media approach and have new plan execution in place at retail, all of which combine to really drive this product.”

Delacenserie also said Keno is in a growth pattern, surpassing Powerball sales in the state. “People have really embraced Keno wholeheartedly,” he said.

In other business, the board approved incentive plans for both the Scratch-off and Keno

product lines, a test pilot program for the game Win Place and Show, game rules and regulations for eleven Scratch-off games and three Instant Play games, and amended rules for three draw games.

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be August 10.

The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM EST, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. Committee meetings will begin at 8:00 AM EST.

Kentucky Lottery to Test New Lottery Game Based on Horse Racing Results

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (June 26, 2018) -- The Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s Board of Directors has approved a trial introduction of “Win Place Show,” a lottery game based on the results of live horse racing. The board has approved a pilot test beginning March 24, 2019. The pilot will consist of the game being offered in limited release at approximately 45 stores in the Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky regions, and is expected to span 90 days.

The development, roll-out and operation of “Win Place Show” will be a result of the collaborative efforts between the Kentucky Lottery Corporation, EquiLottery LLC, and IGT, the Lottery’s draw game system vendor. “We’re looking forward to seeing how our players respond to this new game,” said Kentucky Lottery Corporation CEO Tom Delacenserie.

The market research indicates the game could be a good opportunity for the lottery to appeal to existing players and bring in new players.  To offer a game that uses a signature Kentucky industry is an exciting opportunity.

Win Place Show” is a lottery game based on the results of an actual live horse race. Players will buy one or more $2 quick pick Lottery tickets at participating retailers through the same draw game system that produces games such as Powerball and Pick 3. The ticket will feature three horses along with their numbers based on their post position at the track, along with basic racetrack information and post time. With the “Win Place Show” mobile app, players can watch the featured races live or on replay and see if they’ve won.

This is a great opportunity for us to premiere our vision for a live sports lottery,” said EquiLottery Founder and CEO Brad Cummings. “We look forward to this chance to deliver an exciting and innovative new game to Kentuckians that our studies say will increase scholarship funding through existing and new player participation, and give much needed awareness to the horse racing industry in Kentucky and beyond. We anticipate this being just the beginning for our Louisville-based company.”

Retailers participating in this pilot will be selected by lottery staff based on store location and sales. A complete list of participating retailers will be made available. For more information on “Win Place Show”, go to

Gambling Commission Announces Further Plans to Protect Children

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. (June 26, 2018) -- The Gambling Commission has set out further commitments to protecting children and young people from the dangers of gambling, building on work already underway in this area.

The Commission asked its expert advisers for specific advice on the critical theme of children, young people and gambling.

Bringing together existing work and acting on the advice provided by the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB), the Commission’s strengthened focus seeks to ensure the right protections are in place to reduce the risk of harm to children and young people.

The gambling regulator has called for all those responsible for safeguarding children, to work together with the Commission to address the wide range of issues identified in RGSB’s advice. Actions are needed to address:

  • access and exposure to gambling by children and young people;
  • digital and online risks;
  • preventative education and treatment;
  • evidence collection and consumer engagement.

Tim Miller, an Executive Director at the Gambling Commission, said: “We have a strong commitment to protecting children and young people from the harm gambling can pose – it’s at the heart of how we regulate. We asked our expert advisers, the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board, to consider this critical theme. The advice helps us to refocus and reinforce what we are doing already, and what we need to do next. For example, this year we will be carrying out targeted compliance and enforcement activity to identify and tackle any weaknesses in the age verification processes.

“Safeguarding children in a digital age is complex, and what both RGSB and our research has highlighted is that it takes a multi-faceted approach by us, government, educators, gambling firms and parents. It will take firm ongoing commitments from the Commission as gambling regulator, but also from all of those with a part to play.”

Once done, we can publish the application documents on our website. Spell decision decisions are expected to be taken no sooner on July 5, forms for applying for a gaming license could in that case be available from July 10, (if they do not need to be adjusted due to spelling in the spell order).

Technology and Innovation the Focus at Australasian Gaming Expo 2018

SYDNEY, Australia (June 18, 2018) -- In Australia, gambling expenditure has increased from $22.7 billion in 2014–2015 to $23.6 billion in 2015–2016 (up 3.9 per cent) [1]. The Australasian Gaming Expo (AGE), from 14-16 August 2018, is an annual event run by the Gaming Technologies Association, focusing on fostering a sustainable and prosperous industry.

AGE is the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This year’s program focuses on  technology and innovation across the entire sector, featuring over 200 local and international exhibitors, as well as industry-led seminars covering new technology, gaming, hospitality, service, and the end customer.

Ross Ferrar, CEO, Gaming Technologies Association, shares his insights into the changing industry and what that means for the future.

Our event is crucial for the health of the industry – we promote connections, education, regulation, technology and trends, business and more, to casinos, pubs, clubs and hotels. It’s about empowering local businesses to thrive.

We’ve got a jam-packed show floor this year, featuring the latest innovations direct to the industry. It’s these new technologies driving the evolution of gaming and it’s our job to embrace, explore, train and innovate alongside them. We are proud to provide such a platform for our industry,” said Mr Ferrar.

 Key exhibitors confirmed from the gaming technology sector include:

•   Ainsworth Game Technology

•   Aristocrat Technologies

•   Aruze Gaming Australia

•   Atlas Gaming

•   IGT (Australia)

•   Independent Gaming

•   Interblock Asia Pacific

•   Konami Australia

•   Maxgaming

•   Paltronics Australasia

•   Scientific Games

•   Tabcorp

•   Utopia Gaming Systems

•   Wymac Gaming

This year’s event will incorporate technology into the visitor experience offering Teleportals, or virtual assistants, across the show floor to aid guests with their enquiries.

All AGE registered delegates will also have a Konduko reader in their lanyard – a small digital platform that can be tapped at exhibitor stands they visit.

At the end of each day a “Daily Digest” email containing a full round-up of information from the day is delivered to the delegate’s inbox, in either PDF, PowerPoint, or short video format.

For 2018, we are really aiming to provide a 360 degree digital-focus, to elevate our event and provide real ROI to our stakeholders. We want to be at the forefront of the industry, to make Australasian gaming, global gaming,” added Mr Ferrar.

 Australasian Gaming Expo is the world’s third largest hospitality and gaming tradeshow and will take place at International Convention Centre Sydney, 14 – 16 August 2018.
