Exhibition Opening and Welcome Dinner

Lotteries professionals from around the world converged on Adelaide yesterday to meet, to listen and learn, to share their knowledge and experience and to establish and benefit from positive networking relationships.

Under the theme "The knowledge to Lead. The vision to Prosper" the 2002 World Lottery Congress burst into life with the opening of the trade exhibition held at the acclaimed Adelaide Convention Centre. Fourty five exhibitors showcased the latest technologies and state-of-the-art thinking in the lottery industry.

Delegates, Exhibitors, Partners and Special Guests were welcomed to Adelaide by Master of Ceremonies, TV personality Ian Leslie.

The Welcome Dinner featured food and wine designed to celebrate Australian produce.

June Roache Chief Executive Officer of SA Lotteries gave a special thanks to WLA Delegates and volunteers who had travelled long distances to attend the conference. She also paid tribute to the WLA contributors for their assistance and support.

Ms Roache said delegates would find the business program challenging, interesting and thought-provoking.

"The theme of our congress is ‘The knowledge to Lead. The vision to Prosper’ – a theme that we considered most appropriate when considering the issues facing the lotteries industry worldwide. Our organisations may be diverse in size, in shareholders, and in geography, but there are several key common issues as we move forward" Ms Roache said.

Ms Roache told delegates the congress program will explore ways in which ethical considerations and government regulations need to be integrated into strategic thinking.

Ms Roache said the business program has been developed around four key themes of business ethics, intellectual property, future enabling technologies, and innovation for sustainable growth.

Ms Roache assured delegates that they will be stimulated, enlightened and motivated by the line-up of international speakers throughout the week and that she looked forward to joining delegates in pushing the boundaries of thinking as the congress theme song says – ‘together we will lead the way forward.’

The Congress was then officially opened by the very entertaining Minister for Government Enterprises the Hon. Patrick Conlon, who invited delegates and their partners to sample all that beautiful South Australia has to offer.

Reidar Nordby JR. President of the World Lottery Association also gave delegates a warm welcome and said delegates would be inspired by the excellent business program and networking opportunities.
