| Check Your Own Lotto Tickets
In-store NEW ZEALAND (March 17,
2008) -- New Zealand Lotteries is rolling out
new self-service ticket checker units to all of its Lotto outlets around the
country. NZ Lotteries Chief Executive Todd McLeay says
that for the past few months select stores have been piloting the units and
with that phase completed the national roll out begins.
The reaction from the shops who have been testing
the ticket-checker idea has been amazing, Todd McLeay said
Feedback from pilot retailers is that the new service is in hot demand
from customers who want to check their own tickets in-store, he
said.
Using these new units our
customers will be able to check Lotto, Strike, Powerball, Big Wednesday and
Keno tickets for themselves. They simply pass the barcode on the front of
the ticket under the readers red laser beam to see whether it is a
winning ticket. If customers have a winning ticket
with a prize value of under $5000, then the unit will tell them exactly how
much they have won. If prize value is above $5000 they will be shown what
division they have won. Other prizes such as Winning Wheel, bonus tickets,
Second Chance Draw, promotional vouchers and other merchandise prizes will also
be displayed when won. All winners will still need to contact a retailer to
validate or claim prizes. Instant Kiwi tickets cannot
be read at the moment. We are gradually putting new barcodes on Instant
Kiwi tickets so they can be scanned by the units. When all the Instant Kiwi tickets have this barcode (in
mid-2008) then the ticket checker units will be enabled to be used for Instant
Kiwis as well. The ticket checker units were supplied
to NZ Lotteries by GTECH Corporation
our gaming system supplier based in Rhode Island in the USA. GTECH has
been working with NZ Lotteries for 20 years and is a reliable and trusted
partner. The technology is a standard laser scanner,
the units are connected to the in store lottery terminal and in turn to the
central gaming system. Other ways to check your Lotto
tickets include In person at the Lotto retail counter, online at
www.nzlotteries.co.nz, via the teletext function on your television or by
phoning 0900 90900 (standard charges apply). SOURCE:

California
Lottery Tickets Offered in More Places
SACRAMENTO, California, USA (March 13, 2008) --With an eye
out for unique retailers to add to the traditional convenience stores where
Lottery tickets are sold, the California
Lottery has added 1,500 new retail locations in the past year. As a result
of the recruitment effort, Lottery tickets are now sold at more than 20,000
authorized retailers, including some pet stores, fitness clubs, golf driving
ranges and a car dealership in Los Angeles, South Bay Ford.
Were proud to welcome these new retailers
to the California Lottery family, said
Joan Borucki, director of the
California Lottery. They will help us bring great service to Lottery
players and more fun to this great state!
The growing network of
retail locations makes the California Lottery a partner with local businesses
in nearly every community in the state. Retailers are chosen by the Lottery and
based on requirements from the Lottery Act. Characteristics of successful
candidates are convenient location, accessibility and strong, positive
relations with customers. To ensure the Lotterys integrity, all retailers
must pass a thorough background check and a financial profile to verify
financial stability. Authorized retailers can be
found by visiting www.calottery.com/locations. California now has one Lottery
retailer for every 1,800 residents. California has fewer retailers per
residents than the other ten most populous states where the ratio averages one
retailer for every 1,400 residents. Expansion of the retail network in order to
ensure convenient consumer access was reiterated as part of the 2007 Business
Plan. In the latest fiscal year, retailers sold more
than $3.3 billion in Lottery products. Commissions and bonuses to retailers
amounted to more than $230 million. The strong performance of retailers enabled
the California Lottery to contribute more than $1 billion to California
classrooms for the seventh consecutive year. More
than 95 cents of every Lottery dollar is returned to the community in the form
of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions. The California
Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on
Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales
to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has
contributed more than $20 billion to California schools out of total sales of
nearly $55 billion. Retailers benefit too, earning $3.5 billion in compensation
since 1985. CONTACTS: California State Lottery (www.calottery.com), Olga Gallardo or Cathy

National
Lottery Research Reveals £5.8m is Now Needed to Live the Millionaire
Lifestyle £5.8m to
Live the Millionaire Lifestyle in the UK UNITED KINGDOM (March 10, 2008) -- The price of the
millionaire dream has rocketed during recent years with £5.8m now needed
before you can consider yourself comfortably rich and more
than £100 million is required to join the elite mega-wealthy.
New research conducted for the
National Lottery by economists at the
CEBR1 looks at five classes of millionaires in Britain, from the
never-have-to-work-again riches of reality TV stars through to Premiership
footballers, the super-rich and beyond. For the first time the realities of
different millionaire lifestyles have been laid bare and the findings are an
astonishing insight into what being rich really means in Britain today:
The millionaire
lifestyle report has unveiled
.
- you need a bank balance of
£1.7 million in order to get your foot on the millionaire ladder
today
- a lottery win of £5.8
million is revealed as the amount required to finance most peoples ideal
millionaire lifestyle
- it takes an average
£13.8 million to join the premiership footballers and their WAGs in
living a life of luxury
- with a sum of around £58.6
million you could live like some of the UKs biggest celebrities and super
models
- to live like the Beckhams
you need a staggering £108m to fund your lifetime spending this
rises to an amazing £143.5m for someone aged 18-30, living in London
Just two years ago, it was
reported2 that you needed a bank balance of £2.6 million to afford the
dream millionaires lifestyle, yet that amount has now more than doubled.
The National Lotterys new study pinpoints increasing property prices,
rising inflation and increasing consumer demands as the reasons why you now
need an average £5.8m to fund a luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by many
wealthy celebrities. However this lifestyle represents just the second level in
the five-tiered millionaire scale unveiled by the new report.
The
National Lotterys millionaire scale
The Blue Millionaire = £1.7 million
To get yourself on the millionaire ladder you now need to
win around £1.7million on the National Lottery. With this amount you
could own your home out-right, buy a couple of luxury cars, treat yourself to a
modest holiday home in the Med and even give up the day job. Luxury purchases
might include expensive watches, golf club membership and a brand new Land
Rover and Alfa Romeo 147 on the driveway. And friends and family could expect
to get a small hand-out too but in all other areas spending patterns would need
to remain unchanged if the windfall was going to last a lifetime.
The Silver Millionaire = £5.8 million
A bank balance of this
proportion would see you living a silver-lined millionaire lifestyle which is
enjoyed by many TV celebrities and musicians such as Will Young, Katie Melua
and Joss Stone. Moving into the millionaire band with Britains hottest
musicians would bring a smart detached house, a luxury holiday villa, top of
the range BMWs and even some staff. It would also fund some serious shopping
sprees and a sensational annual party to impress the new neighbours!
The Gold Millionaire = £13.8 million
Further up the millionaire league table, Premiership
footballers and other hugely successful sportsmen such as Lewis Hamilton and
Jenson Bunton have developed a millionaire club all of their own in recent
years. Their spending power puts them above the average musician or TV
celebrity and you would need a windfall of around £13.8 million to join
their ranks. A fleet of fast cars, a magnificent mansion, your own chauffeur
and amazing trips abroad are par for the course, plus you get to shop like a
WAG! The Platinum Millionaire = £58.6
million However the study found that the fourth
tier of the millionaire scale is a big stepup. To live like some of
Britains most successful film actors, actresses and even supermodels, you
are looking at a bank balance of nearly £60 million. An estate, an
expensive London townhouse, a mansion in Los Angeles, a chef, fast cars,
designer clothes, art collections and diamonds are all within comfortable reach
for this group. The Black-Card Millionaire =
£108.6 million Finally, £108.6 million
is now the eye-watering price to live like the richest people in Britain. The
statistics show that this is the minimum needed to fund a lifetime of
extravagant spending where money really is no object. A fleet of world class
cars, several estates and a private yacht would all be within reach, although
if you were between 18 and 30 you would in fact need a staggering £143.5
million to truly join the global jetsetters. In reality, this is a lifestyle
that even most celebrities cannot afford and is left to just a few hugely
successful celebrities to experience such as David & Victoria Beckham and
Madonna & Guy Richie as well as extremely wealthy businessmen.

There are around
400,000 millionaires in the UK and most people have pre-conceived ideas about
the millionaire lifestyle they probably lead, says a National Lottery
spokesperson. This report shows there are in fact many different
levels at which you can enjoy a lifetime of luxury and the price tag that it
comes with each varies enormously too. Its easier to be a millionaire in the North East
& Wales where you live can affect your
millionaire status, according to the research conducted by CEBR for the
National Lottery. As well as large variations in property prices across the
regions in the UK, the cost of consumables such as food and drink and even cars
and clothes varies geographically. To live the ideal
Silver millionaire lifestyle in London the most
expensive region - you need a lottery win nearly twice the size than those
living in the North East, the least expensive region. Property prices and the
cost of living is such that you need £9 million to live the average
millionaire lifestyle, this compares to just £4.8m in the North East.
Indeed London is much more expensive than any other
region, including the South East and East of England where you would need on
average £6.5 million to live the silver-lined millionaire lifestyle.
Elsewhere in the UK you would need to scoop £5.6m on the lottery in
Northern Ireland, £5.3 million in Scotland and £4.7 million in
Wales to live the millionaires
dream.

5711 Mandated Profit Percentage Restricts Lottery Funds
For Education OKLAHOMA CITY,
Oklahoma, USA (March 18, 2008) -- Speaking at the Lottery Board of Trustees
public meeting on Tuesday, March 18, the Secretary of the
Florida Lottery and the Executive Director
of the North Carolina Lottery each
stressed to the Board that mandating a profit percentage, such as that in the
Oklahoma Education Lottery Act, actually restricts the real dollars that can be
raised for lottery beneficiaries.
 |
Leo DiBenigno, Secretary of the Florida
Lottery, indicated that up until July 2002, Florida prize payouts had been
restricted to 50 percent of sales and transfers to education had been mandated
at 38 percent for scratcher games, and 39 percent for online (computerized)
games. With these profit restrictions
removed, we are projecting profits from our scratcher games to be about $235
million higher (93 percent) this fiscal year than they were in 2002,
DiBenigno said. In the six years that Florida has had flexible
prize authority the Lottery has generated $822 million more for education from
its scratcher product than would have been generated under the pre-2002 set
percentage restrictions. According to
DiBenigno, the increased profits began to be realized almost immediately after
implementation of the variable prize and profit authority.
I can say without reservation that this has been
an excellent deal for our players and for Florida education
beneficiaries, he said. Tom Shaheen, Executive Director of the
North Carolina Lottery said, When the North Carolina Lottery began
(2006) we had a mandated profit percentage of 35 percent, much like the
Oklahoma Lottery currently has. This mandate was removed during the first
legislative session after our start-up, which allowed us to increase prize
payouts in our games, particularly the scratcher games. In the past three
months, since we increased prize payouts our weekly scratcher sales have
increased 94 percent.
Shaheen attributes this
growth to players winning more prizes, more often, which in turn encourages
them to play more often. The Board of Trustees
invited DiBenigno and Shaheen to appear at its March quarterly meeting so Board
members could hear first-hand the results of other states that had removed
previously mandated profit restrictions from their law. The Board quizzed
them about details of their law change and revisions to their sales and
marketing plans once the profit restrictions were removed.
Bill Paul, Chairman of the Board, said he found it hard to
understand why Oklahoma would continue to mandate a profit restriction when it
is clear that the need for education funding continues to grow each year.
Just recently I have read several stories in
the press about the funding crisis facing Oklahoma schools, Paul
said. I am hopeful that the Oklahoma Legislature will act
favorably in removing the 35 percent profit restriction from the Lottery Act so
that Oklahoma can begin to realize some of the benefits that have been achieved
in other lottery states that either dont have a profit restriction or
have had them removed. SOURCE:

Massachusetts
State Lottery to launch Keno-to-Go Initiative expected to boost sales
$100 million; local aid by $20 million.
MASSACHUSETTS, USA (March 20, 2008) - The Massachusetts
State Lottery Commission announced today its KENO-to-Go
program, its latest initiative to serve and entertain its players while raising
revenue for the Commonwealth's 351 cities and towns. KENO-to-Go will allow Lottery players to purchase KENO
tickets at locations that currently do not offer the game. Players will be able
to purchase tickets for upcoming KENO draws and check their numbers on the
Massachusetts Lottery website.
KENO-to-Go locations would not have a KENO monitor.
Current Lottery agents who sell other products will be allowed to apply to
become KENO-to-Go agents. The sale of KENO-to-Go tickets would be nearly
identical to sales of Mass Cash, Megabucks, Mega Millions or other on-line
games. As part of this program, the Massachusetts
State Lottery will not be adding any monitors to any location in any
municipality.
"We believe KENO-to-Go
presents an exciting opportunity for our players and agents," Executive
Director Mark Cavanagh said. "Sometimes customers can't get to their
favorite place to play KENO and this will give them a chance to win wherever
they may be." Players bought more than $775
million in KENO tickets last fiscal year and won more than $538 million in
prizes. Currently, the Massachusetts State Lottery has approximately 1,776 KENO
agents among its total of 7,500 licensed agents. Lottery officials estimate the KENO-to-Go program will result
in increased annual sales of about $100 million when fully implemented. The
program will likely generate about $20 million more in aid for Massachusetts
communities. "We're continually searching for
opportunities to fulfill our mission of raising revenue for our cities and
towns," Cavanagh said. "KENO-to-Go is the latest in a long line of games
designed to entertain our players while raising much needed revenue for police
officers, firefighters, teachers and other essential community services."
The Massachusetts State Lottery is in the midst of
its best year ever with sales increasing by about 6 percent from last year.
Lottery officials expect to raise more than $900 million for the Bay State's
351 cities and towns during the current fiscal year. SOURCE: Massachusetts Lottery |
