Norsk Tipping Will Introduce Mandatory Registration For Participation In Gaming

HAMAR, Norway (April 20, 2007) -- Norsk Tipping is planning to introduce mandatory registration for participation in gaming for all its gambling activities with the exception of Flax, their instant tickets. In doing so, Norsk Tipping will be the first State-owned gaming company to introduce mandatory registration.

Approximately 1.7 million Norwegians have already acquired Norsk Tipping’s gaming card, and the vast majority of these use the card every time they play Lotto or the Norwegian football pools. Nine of ten kroner placed in Norsk Tipping’s retailer terminal-based games (all games except Flax) are already placed by registered players using smart cards. Two games, Joker and Extra, have since their introduction required players to be registered. The player registration on submitting coupons has been customary from the start of the lottery nearly 60 years ago, at the time one was using the old coupons with name and address, and later the more modern gaming card. The essential service is that players have their winnings paid out, regardless of whether they check the results or not, and – most importantly – even if the receipt has been accidentally lost or destroyed. “When we now recommend that the remaining ten percent of the players stakes should also be registered, the most likely reaction we would expect from the vast majority is ‘that’s fine with me’: The vast majority of players are already used to registered games, and are well aware of the advantages this offers”, says Reidar Nordby Jr., President and CEO of Norsk Tipping.

Even though the games operated by Norsk Tipping have only a minimum effect in inducing compulsive and habitual gaming, our environment expects that a state-owned gaming company leads the way in combating compulsive and habitual gaming and gambling and excessive stakes”, says Nordby.

Personally defined  limits on eg stakes, maximum accepted losses and time usage can be very effective tools in avoiding individuals from developing unhealthy gaming and gambling habits. Registered gaming will provide a unique opportunity to stipulate limits, and this applies in particular in connection with the new gaming machines  (IVT’s) that Norsk Tipping now has the exclusive right to run in Norway, thus striving to ensure that individual players do not play for more than they can afford to lose.

It is also relevant to point out that registered gaming also has a unique crime-prevention aspect. The national economical police authorities have on many occasions referred to unregistered gaming as a potential arena for money laundering and organised crime activities.

There remain a number of unanswered questions with regard to precisely how limits will be advised,  stipulated and managed. Norsk Tipping will now embark on an in depth study of all the details of how this can be accomplished in practice to ensure that the best solution is identified that does not come into conflict with current legislation and regulation on personal data protection.

Certus Delivers New Game To Swedish Media Company Website

REKJAVÍK, Iceland (April 25, 2007) -- Certus has developed and delivered a game called Blockwar to its Swedish client, TV4. The game recently went live on the media company’s website www.blip.se.

Betware

Blockwar is a modern version of the traditional Tetris® game, with several updated differences. Primarily, it is a multiplayer game in which up to five players can compete against each other on the same screen. Players can also “attack” each other with special objects in order to get ahead of their opponents (the effect of being “attacked” can vary from almost harmless, where one line of blocks is added to an opponent’s game, to devastating “quakes” messing up the competitor’s board). At all times during a game, the player can monitor his opponents’ games and chat with them, in real time.

Certus specializes in multiplayer gaming communities and we were very excited about this project. We have done all the development from the design of the game to layout and other specifications”, says Morten Kolle Christensen, Managing Director, Certus.

Within a week of its launch the game is proving to be very popular at the website, recording as many as 130 players playing at the same time at peak hours. “The idea of taking a traditional game and adapting it to a new, dynamic web environment is a winning formula”, says Thomas Carlsson, Chief Editor of www.blip.se.

While classic versions are single player, Blockwar transcends this by being interactive between several players thus ensuring that the game keeps up with new gaming trends of interactivity. “Blockwar will serve to create a more dynamic gaming environment with a large focus on player satisfaction, thus ensuring player loyalty”, add Christensen. Income on the game is generated through subscriptions, play money and real money as well as banners from advertisers.

Blockwar went live on Sweden’s TV4 website www.blip.se on 18th April 2007.

OLG Distributes $16.8 Million To 23 Host Communities

Ontario, Canada (April 20, 2007) -- Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) today issued more than $16.8 million in fourth-quarter non-tax gaming revenue payments to 23 municipalities that host OLG Casinos and OLG Slots-at-racetrack facilities. To date, OLG has distributed $467.7 million to these host municipalities.

Fourth-quarter payments were issued to communities hosting OLG gaming sites for their share of gross slots revenue from operations (January to March 2007). Payments are made on a quarterly basis according to OLG's fiscal year, which runs from April to March.

Each municipality hosting an OLG Casino or an OLG Slots-at-racetrack facility receives five per cent of the gaming facility's gross slot machine from the first 450 slot machines and two per cent from any additional machines over that number. Funds are used at the discretion of the municipality.

Tracks and their horse people also share the revenue generated by the slots program, with 20 per cent of gross slot machine revenue split evenly between the two groups. Since the launch of the program in 1998, more than $2.06 billion has been shared equally between racetrack owners and their horse people.

In 2007/2008, the province will allocate $105 million in gaming revenue to support charities through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Government will increase the annual funding to OTF by $20 million by 2009/2010.

Every year, the Government of Ontario allocates two per cent of gross revenue from slot machines at OLG Casinos and OLG Slots-at-racetrack facilities to the province's problem gambling program for research, treatment and prevention programs. The amount for fiscal 2007/2008 is estimated at $37 million.

OLG is a provincial agency responsible for province-wide gaming facilities and lottery games. With revenues of $6 billion and more than 20,000 employees and associates, OLG is one of North America's leading gaming enterprises.

Lucky Streak Game Debuts In Test Market

LANSING, Michigan, USA (April 24, 2007) - Get on a Lucky Streak! The Michigan Lottery's newest Club Game, Lucky Streak, is currently being tested in approximately 300 western Michigan locations and a few select locations in the Lansing area.

In Lucky Streak, players select how many draws they wish to play, from 1 through 6.  They then select one number between zero and nine for each draw played.  One winning number will be drawn and displayed on the Club Keno monitor every 4 minutes just before the Kicker and Club Keno drawings.  On a $1 wager, players win up to $500,000 for matching their number on every draw played.  To increase odds of winning a cash prize, players can use the Lucky Streak Plus feature.  For an extra $1, players can "hedge their bets" and win by matching their numbers on fewer draws.

Swisslos Uses adesso Technology to Bring Lottery to the Internet

The Swiss intercantonal national lottery SWISSLOS is now using FIRSTspirit as the central content management system for maintaining Euro Millions

The popular lottery game is available to Swiss players for the first time on the Internet

DORTMUND, Germany (March 29, 2007) -- adesso and its wholly owned subsidiary e-Spirit successfully implemented yet another lottery project in January 2007. At www.euromillions.ch, the Swiss can now play for a sizable Europe-wide jackpot.

Advertise Here

Participants from across Europe compete with each other for the multimillion euro main prize -- that’s the idea behind Euro Millions, the new European coordinated lottery game. In the participating countries (participation is not possible in Germany), local lottery companies run Euro Millions autonomously -- according to their own conditions for participation and at their own expense. But the game rules and the winning numbers are the same for everyone. The takings from all Euro Millions countries are pooled, making weekly jackpots of up to 100 million possible.

The Swiss lottery company SWISSLOS launched its new online portal in spring 2006. As general contractor, Swisscom IT Services had been assigned the task of implementing the new SWISSLOS game platform, with the help of a mixed project team of adesso and e-Spirit among other partners. e-Spirit partner company Planetactive was responsible for the GUI, while adesso and e-Spirit contributed their lottery expertise for the technical implementation.

With the expansion of the platform in 2007, the Internet lottery game Euro Millions was introduced for the first time in Switzerland. For this, it was necessary to offer users an intuitive interface in German, Italian and French. The particular challenge was to keep the international flavor of the product while respecting the country-specific conditions for participation. All Swiss players are referred to their appropriate lottery company based on their place of residence. In Switzerland, Euro Millions is operated jointly by SWISSLOS (German-speaking Switzerland, Ticino and the Principality of Liechtenstein) and Loterie Romande (western Switzerland).

The content management system FIRSTspirit gives editors an easy-to-use tool to maintain content on www.euromillions.ch.

FIRSTspirit supports multiple clients, thus ensuring that the different companies and their customers are kept clearly separate from each other.

The SWISSLOS offering can be accessed via 60 domains, including swisslotto.ch, Sporttipp.ch, and euromillions.ch. Each site is presented with its own look and feel.

Leaning heavily on a learning format developed at Harvard University, Erewhon is a case study program created for the lottery sector by the WLA Founding President Guy Simonis. For 16 years EREWHON  has been held numerous times in the UK, in Austria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, as well as in Australia’s Perth and near Brisbane, in Campinas, Brazil and recently for the third time in South Africa. The program has also been presented for NASPL in many locations in the United States and now returns with additional cases the shores of the Black Sea

Under the guidance, Guy Simonis himself, a hypothetical lottery organization is presented down to the last detail. Every possible area affecting a lottery is defined and examined, including the demographics and political situation of the equally hypothetical country.

EREWHON DESCRIBED

Over the last sixteen years, the World Lottery Association’s case-study course EREWHON has entertained, amused and educated close to 800 lottery staff and management from across the world

Sixteen years of the single topic of lottery management seems at first glance to be a promise of a stale and worn-out concept. And yet, every one of these exciting learning marathons had a totally different atmosphere and character from any one ERWHON seminar that preceded it. Without exception they were all a great success. The mix of the participants from lottery companies from far-flung corners of the world find themselves challenged to give group advice to the fictitious but much troubled EREWHON State Lottery.

With each of the 30 or so case studies that follow each other in rapid fashion, the newly-minted consultants must dig deep into their own background and experience only to be met with astounded glances from their study partners from other parts of the world who have a totally different perspective on how to deal with a given problem.

Yet it is the newcomer to the lottery industry and who has little experience who provides the most rational solution, thereby proving that common sense is often equal to experience

The EREWHON case-study format provides the unique vehicle to enable participants to challenge the lottery sector’s principles and solve problems from a different vantage point. Such an experience cannot be obtained within the setting of the students’ place of employment. Politeness and fear of offending senior management makes for silent critics within any organization.

No one needs to feel offended or defensive in discussing EREWHON’s difficult problems, because after all, there is no EREWHON staff or management to be concerned about.

Many participants feel free to criticize the approach proposed by their team mates, only to find that in retrospect their advice was not so brilliant either.

Strange as it may sound to those who have never attended this intense study program, the joy is in the exhilarating pressure of working the longest hours per day that any study course has ever demanded. Sixteen hour-days are not unusual because after the regular seminar day has ended, groups strive until late into the night to complete their assigned projects .They work to win and laugh, learn and discover in the process.

After sixteen successful years they keep coming, working, learning and loving it.
