New Mexico Lottery Sets Sales & Profit Records; $36.9 Million for
College Scholarships
.
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, USA (August
17, 2006) -- The New Mexico Lottery
Authority has posted record sales and educational profits for the 12 months
that ended June 30. Preliminary and unaudited figures for fiscal year
2006 show gross sales exceeding $154.6 million, an increase of more than $15.4
million (11.04%) over the previous fiscal year. Lottery profits earmarked
for the Lottery Success Scholarship program were $36.9 million, an increase of
approximately $4.6 million (14.35%) over last year, topping $30 million for the
fourth straight year.
All profits (net income) are
earmarked for the Lottery Success Scholarship program, providing in-state
tuition at more than two dozen New Mexico public colleges and universities.
This is great news
for the students of New Mexico and for the State of New Mexico," said
Lottery CEO Tom Romero. I am proud of what was accomplished last
year and want to thank the Lottery retailers, players, vendors and staff for
all their efforts.
Romero said that two record
Powerball jackpot run-ups exceeding $300
million helped to make this a record year for the Lottery. Scratcher
sales totaled $89.4 million and accounted for nearly 58% of total sales.
Sales for Powerball, the multi-state lotto game, were $54.1 million and
accounted for more than one-third of the Lotterys sales for FY2006.
Roadrunner Cash sales of $8.3
million were spurred by the top-prize reaching $200,000 to $390,000, as well as
by increasing the number of drawings from six to seven nights per week.
On-line (computerized) game sales
for New Mexicos Pick 3 game were $2 million, while sales for the 4 This
Way! game totaled just under $800,000.
During todays board of
directors meeting, Board Chair Reta Jones called the unprecedented sales and
return figures a significant accomplishment for the New Mexico
Lottery. She also praised the organization for a pattern of
increased sales and net revenues raised for New Mexico public education.
The Lottery has returned more than
$286 million to educational programs since 1996 when ticket sales began in New
Mexico. The $286 million raised includes nearly $219.5 million that has
been transferred to the Lottery Tuition Fund and $66.5 million that was
previous transferred to the states Public School Capital Outlay
Fund. The Lottery-funded distributions for capital outlay were made
between 1996 thru 2002, for school construction and repairs for grades K-12 at
61 school districts.
According to the New Mexico Higher
Education Department, as of the Spring 2005 semester, nearly 38,000 students
have benefited from the Lottery Success Scholarship since the program began in
1997. Updated statistics are pending.
BACKGROUND
The following is a history of New
Mexico Lottery gross sales and net revenues (profits) since inception.
Fiscal year 1996 sales were only about nine weeks long; all other fiscal years
run July 1 June 30. Fiscal year 2006 figures and total remain
preliminary and unaudited. All figures are rounded. Of the total
amount of money transferred for New Mexico education, $66.5 million was used
for school construction and repairs from fiscal 1997 through fiscal 2001.

The 960,000 tickets went on sale
July 21st and were expected to last anywhere from 12 to 15 weeks at retail
locations. However, nearly all the tickets left the KLC's warehouse just three
weeks into sales.
"The rapid sellout demonstrates
the strong appeal of this game to both lottery players and horse racing
fans," said Kenneth Kirchner, senior vice president of development for the
National Thoroughbred Racing Association. "The Kentucky Lottery staff has
done a tremendous job with the game and we're very pleased additional tickets
will now be available."
"Our players have overwhelmingly
responded to this ticket," said KLC senior vice president of sales and
marketing Steve Casebeer. "We think they really enjoy the unique play-style
of the ticket and the incredible second-chance promotion tied to it. We've been
able to scramble and order an additional 480,000 tickets which should arrive at
retailers by next weekend (August 26th), so players will still be able to find
tickets to enter into the second-chance drawings before the September 15th
entry deadline."
This year's Breeders' Cup World
Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs.

A handful of the tickets were held
back so they could be sold at the KLC's booth at the Kentucky State Fair
starting this Thursday.
The KLC and the NTRA teamed up to
provide 10 exclusive grand-prize packages for second-chance winners which
include:
- Accommodations at the Galt House
Hotel in Louisville for two nights;
- Transportation to the track on
Breeders' Cup Day;
- Tickets to the Breeders' Cup;
- Tickets to the track (with food
vouchers) on Friday, Nov. 3;
- Access to an expert handicapper
on Breeders' Cup Day;
- A $500 betting voucher;
- $500 in spending money;
- A Breeders' Cup press kit,
and;
- An invitation to the Breeders'
Cup post-race reception.
Players can enter the second-chance
promotion via U.S. mail or through the Kentucky Lottery Web site. Five winners
will be chosen from mailed entries, and the other five from Internet entries.
Players who submit Internet entries
must retain their tickets as proof of purchase and submit the winning ticket
within 10 days of notification.
All entries must be received by
September 15, and the grand prize drawings will be held

MDIs American Idol® Count Jumps to Seven, Idol Mania
Already Goes Coast to Coast
ALPHARETTA, Georgia, USA (August 21,
2006) -- An additional lottery has signed on to launch American Idol®
instant tickets to coincide with the sixth television season of the astounding
talent reality show. That brings the total to seven, with numerous other
lotteries now including it in their planning discussions.
American Idol
is a true phenomenon, said Steve Saferin, MDI president. No
other television show in recent history has enjoyed this kind of buzz. It
presents lotteries with a unique opportunity to reach out to new players and
reinforce their relevance. With its escalating ratings history, an Idol game
can be a dynamic part of any lotterys instant ticket
portfolio.
And its certainly not too
late. American Idol Season 6 starts in January, Saferin noted, an excellent
time to launch this popular ticket.
The holidays will be
over and traditionally Lotteries are looking for a strong game to keep sales up
after a successful holiday sales season, he said. This is
the perfect ticket.
American Idol is offered to
lotteries exclusively through MDI
Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ:
SGMS). In addition to cash prizes, the game offers cool merchandise and trips
to next seasons finale!
American Idol has remained the #1
and #2 show in America for five years in a row. More than 31 million viewers on
average watched every episode of Season 5 and over 42 million tuned in to the
Season 5 finale when Alabamas Taylor Hicks was crowned the 5th American
Idol.
The buzz for the upcoming Season 6
is already huge. So far, literally tens of thousands of wanna-be Idols have
lined up for auditions in Pasadena, New Jersey and San Antonio. Upcoming
auditions are being held in Birmingham, Memphis, Minneapolis and Seattle.
The two Idol Lottery games that
launched last year both performed well, indexing over 100.

Schools Hit The Jackpot: Virginia Lottery Sets New Records For Fiscal
Year 2006
RICHMOND, Virginia (August 22, 2006)
-- With a record-setting performance in Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06), the
Virginia Lottery is turning over more
than $454 million to Virginias K-12 public schools - an event Virginia
Governor Tim Kaine marked today by accepting a ceremonial check from new
Virginia Lottery Executive Director Sheila Hill-Christian.
This is a substantial
dividend for K-12 public schools in the Commonwealth, said Governor
Kaine. Lottery profits are an important part of our significant
investment in public education, which in itself is an investment in making sure
we continue moving Virginia forward.
Governor Kaine visited the
Lotterys headquarters in downtown Richmond to accept the check on behalf
of Virginias public schools. Lottery proceeds have been earmarked
exclusively for K-12 public schools in the Commonwealth since 1999. In 2000,
Virginia voters made that a part of the states constitution by
overwhelmingly approving a constitutional amendment requiring Lottery profits
to be used for K-12 public education.
On June 30, in accordance with that
amendment, the Lottery transferred $454 million into the Lottery Proceeds Fund,
to be distributed by Virginias Department of Education.
We are excited to
have been able to make this contribution to public education in the
Commonwealth, said Ms. Hill-Christian. It represents nearly
a seven and a half percent increase over last year.
The increase comes as a result of
record Lottery sales of more than $1.365 billion. That represents an increase
of more than $31 million from last year, which is about two percent. New
records were set in sales of the Lotterys Pick 3, Pick 4, Mega Millions
and Scratcher games.
One of the years highlights
was the retirement of Lotto South, in favor of the new Win-For-Life game. The
new multi-state game, played in Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky, offers a top
prize of $1,000 per week for the rest of the winners life. Since the
first drawing on March 1, seven Virginia players won the lifetime prize and
another 35 players each won the games second highest prize of
$52,000.
If you ask most people what game
they most associate with the Virginia Lottery, there is a good chance they will
answer Mega Millions. The
ability of Mega Millions to attract national headlines with amazingly-high
jackpots continued in FY06. There were four big jackpot runs during the fiscal
year, leading up to the following big drawings:
 |
- $258 million on September 16,
2005
- $315 million on November 15,
2005
- $270 million on February 28,
2006
- $265 million on April 18,
2006
Each of these jackpot runs was
accompanied by excitement, long lines at Virginia Lottery retailers and
increased profit for Virginias public schools. Overall, Mega Millions
sales in Virginia were up 16 percent, to a total of $159.7 million. While there
was no jackpot winner in Virginia during the year, the Commonwealth did see 37
winning $250,000 tickets.
A trend from previous years that
continued in FY06 was the popularity of scratch games in Virginia. Scratchers
accounted for $689.3 million of the Lotterys sales in FY06, more than
half of the Lotterys total sales.
With popular games like Million
Dollar Madness, Emerald Green 7s and Harley-Davidson® Ultimate Ride,
scratch ticket sales increased 1.4 percent from the previous year to set a new
record.
Virginia Lottery players won a total
of $773.5 million during the fiscal year. Interestingly, more than $14 million
of those prizes were never claimed by the people who won them. By law, all
unclaimed Lottery prizes go to the states Literary Fund, which is used
solely for educational purposes, such as school construction, renovation, and
teacher retirement funding.
It was not just players who won big
in FY06. Virginia Lottery retailers received a record $76.2 million. The
retailers earned that amount by selling Lottery tickets, cashing prizes, and
participating in retailer incentive programs and contests.
What is in store this year as the
Virginia Lottery turns 18? One thing Virginians can expect to see is an
increased effort to educate players and non-players alike that Lottery profits
go exclusively to Virginias K-12 public schools.
One recent study showed
that as much as half the residents of the Commonwealth dont know how they
benefit from Lottery proceeds, said Ms. Hill-Christian. We
have an important message and we are going to work to deliver it.
Another big challenge is competition
from across the state line. On March 30, 2006, the new lottery in North
Carolina began selling tickets. Up until then, North Carolina residents
accounted for an estimated 7 to 10 percent of Virginia Lottery sales.
The new lottery did not have a major
effect on Virginia Lottery sales in FY06, because it started late in the fiscal
year. It will certainly have a negative impact on sales in Virginia in FY07.
However, Ms. Hill-Christian says players will benefit.
Competition is good for the
product and good for the consumer. We intend to work hard, launch exciting
games and continue to uphold the highest ethical standards as we pursue our
mission of helping Virginias public schools.

Internet Poker Consolidates Svenska Spel's Player
Base
VISBY, Sweden (August 22, 2006) --
The Internet poker site operated by Svenska
Spel, the Swedish National Lottery, has been a great success since its
introduction in April 2006. A total of 65,000 players have registered on the
site, wagering more than SEK 2 billion ($280 million) in the first three months
of operation. Svenska Spel has generated a profit of SEK 52 million ($7.2
million) from Internet poker during this period.
The success has enabled the Swedish
National Lottery to recapture a sizable share of the remote gambling market
from private operators. The lottery currently holds an estimated 22% of the
Swedish Internet poker market, and expects to reach 25% by the end of 2006.
 |
Overall, Svenska Spel (excluding
Casino Cosmopol) recorded gross sales of SEK 9.2 billion ($1.29 billion) for
the first six months of 2006, down 1.4% from the first six months of last year.
The overall reduction is mainly attributable to Sweden's ban on smoking in bars
and restaurants, introduced in June 2005, which has affected VLT activity quite
heavily.
Sales of the draw games Lotto, Keno
and Joker increased from last year, while the Oddset sports-betting games
recorded an 11% surge in sales, largely due to increased wagering on the FIFA
World Cup in June.
The most successful scratch ticket
in Sweden, Triss, is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a jubilee
campaign that is expected to bring another record year in sales of this
game.
About Svenska Spel
Svenska Spel is the largest gaming
company in Sweden with a market share of 55% and an annual turnover for 2005 of
SEK 19.6 billion ($2.75 billion). Profits for 2005 amounted to SEK 4.5 billion,
of which around SEK 1.1 billion goes to non-governmental and sports
organizations for children and youth. Svenska Spel is wholly owned by the
Swedish State.

To All Suppliers To The Lottery Sector And All Interested Lottery
Operators; Technology Procurement made Easy, Effective and
Safe
BASEL, Switzerland (August 22, 2006)
-- The World Lottery Association launched its
RFP Standard program some time ago, making lottery procurements cheaper, easier
and more transparent. By providing the standard RFP (Request for Proposals)
template the WLA members are now able to save time and money when conducting
procurement while improving quality and transparency of the process.
The Suppliers responding to such an
RFP will also save time and money, enabling them to provide better proposals at
lower cost.
As a continuation of the RFP
Standardization, WLA, in cooperation with NASPL, is now finalizing the next level: a
Global RFP Best Practice. This is a complete package including:
- Process Description - a
document describing many of the considerations, activities and organizational
issues included in a complete RFP process, from planning to contract signing.
This will help your lottery to ensure the best possible procurement process,
internally and externally.
- RFP Template - A ready
made RFP template, providing ready made recommendations for the structure of an
RFP as well as recommended text for all routine and administrative sections. It
should be noted that the template does not in any way limit or standardize the
products or services to be procured. However, the template dramatically
decreases the administrative and routine risk and burden of the RFP
development.
- RFP Guide - A document
serving as the guide to the Template. It provides explanations, alternative
languages for specific regions and jurisdictions, etc.
The Global RFP Best Practice is
equally applicable to lotteries in Asia, Europe, North America, South America,
Africa and Australia. It offers dramatic shortcuts in the time, effort and
money needed to conduct a procurement while offering confidence in the
procurement process overall.
In immediate conjunction to the WLA
2006 Convention and Trade Show in Singapore, the WLA and NASPL is now offering
a one day work shop on Practical Application of the Procurement Global Best
Practice Singapore, November 11, 2006 at the world famous Raffles
Hotel!
In this one day seminar, the
participants will get acquainted with the complete Procurement Global Best
Practice package, including advice on how to use it, experiences from other
jurisdictions, feedback from suppliers, etc. The seminar is intended for any
lottery planning a procurement project within the coming 24 months. It is also
highly beneficial for suppliers, learning the strategies and intentions of the
RFP Best Practice and therefore becoming able to deliver better proposals,
increasing the probability of winning the business. Staff categories, for which
this seminar is suitable, are therefore:
- Lottery management staff
- Purchasing
- Financial
- Security
- Marketing
- Legal
- RFP coordinators
- Lottery consultants and
advisors
- Vendor Account managers
- Vendor Product Managers
- Proposal coordinators
This most valuable workshop offers
immediate benefits to the participants and their organizations. We recommend an
early registration as registrations are accepted on a first come - first
serve basis.
Accommodation for the workshop will
