MDIs American Idol is a Huge Hit with Lotteries; Sixth Lottery
Commits to Launching Idol Instant Ticket; Whos
Next?
ALPHARETTA, Georgia, USA (August 10,
2006) -- With 10,000 fans lining up this week for the first American Idol®
auditions in Pasadena, its already clear that next season is going to be
even bigger than the past.
And with the number of lotteries
lining up to run American Idol instant tickets, the stage is being set for
another blockbuster season of instant ticket sales.
American Idol is unlike any
television series weve witnessed, said Steve Saferin, MDI
president. Lotteries committed to running American Idol in conjunction
with its next season are ahead of the game.
American Idol is offered to
lotteries exclusively through MDI
Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ:
SGMS). In addition to cash prizes, the game offers cool merchandise and trips
to the next Season Finale!
American Idol has remained the #1
and #2 show in America for five years in a row. More than 31 million viewers on
average watched every episode of Season 5 and over 42 million tuned in to the
Season 5 finale when Alabamas Taylor Hicks was crowned the 5th American
Idol.
The key to successful
lottery sales is to appeal to a new, expanded audience, Saferin said.
Whats going to attract new players more than the hottest thing
on television right now? We anticipate that many lotteries will jump on
this!
The game has performed very well in
the states that launched an Idol-themed game earlier this year, indexing at
well over 100. Saferin noted that with an outstanding new ticket design, the
game will stand out among a lotterys instant ticket line up.
As the number of states planning to
run American Idol lottery games increases, so does that of another television
phenomenon Deal or No Deal. Since MDI announced its agreement to offer the
rights to DoND, eleven lotteries have committed to the game, most launching
this fall when the second television season begins.
In looking at the
incredible interest in American Idol and Deal or No Deal, it is clear lotteries
are focusing their attention on offering games that have universal
appeal, Saferin said.
Season 6 of American Idol begins in
mid-January.

Is The UK A Lucky Place To Live? National Lottery Luck Study
Reveals Two Thirds of Adults are Feeling Lucky
LONDON, United Kingdom (August 4,
2006) -- The National Lottery® today
publishes a major report into the nations attitude towards luck, which
reveals that Brighton is the luckiest feeling city in the UK, while the people
of Aberdeen consider themselves the least lucky.
 |
The National Lottery Luck Study is
the first regional barometer of luck and the most comprehensive research of its
kind ever undertaken. It explores the UKs overall outlook on life, how
much we are in control of our own destinies, our satisfaction with life, and
how this impacts on how lucky we feel.
Contrary to the perception that the
UK is a nation of cynics and wingers, eight out of 10 adults in the UK claim to
be satisfied with most areas of their life and hopeful for the future, with two
thirds of the population (66 per cent) considering themselves to be lucky.
Singletons beware, however, as married and cohabiting couples claim to have the
highest levels of satisfaction, feeling the luckiest of any demographic group
in the study.
Psychologist and author, Dr Linda
Papodopoulos, who led the research on the National Lottery Luck Report,
commented: For a large proportion of people, luck underscores the
decisions they make and whether they believe to have good luck or bad luck
impacts on the kind of life they lead. Overall, we can observe that across the
whole of the UK, the higher the life satisfaction scores come out, the luckier
people feel.
Commenting on the National Lottery
Luck Study, Dianne Thompson, Chief
Executive of lottery operator, Camelot,
added: The National Lottery is synonymous with the concept of luck.
This study shows that as a nation we definitely have a glass half
full attitude which undoubtedly has a positive effect on how lucky we
perceive ourselves.
The research also indicates that
most people feel largely in control of their own destinies. Most UK adults are
inclined towards an internal locus of control, believing
that events result primarily from their own behaviour and actions. Fifty-six
per cent of people demonstrated internal locus of control
while in contrast, only 4 per cent of those surveyed consider their
lives subject to external control.
Other findings in the
National Lottery Luck Study, included:
- Brighton is the most satisfied of
all towns surveyed (residents considered 6.3 of the 7 satisfaction questions to
be true), followed by London in second place (5.7), and Liverpool and Leicester
in joint third place (5.6)
- Cambridge is the city least
satisfied in life (4.2), followed by Glasgow and Leeds (both 4.5)
- Brighton residents feel the
luckiest (93 per cent), followed by people in Liverpool (87 per cent) and
Reading (84 per cent)
- Aberdeen considers itself to be
the least lucky (48 per cent), followed by Edinburgh and Leicester (both 50 per
cent)
- Belfast is the most hopeful for
the future (94 per cent) and West Midlands is the least (80 per cent).
Commenting on the different regional
attitudes toward luck, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, said: There are a number
of factors that can impact on the positivity of a region or town and its
attitude to luck. Key factors include regeneration, tourism, sporting success
and location.
It is no surprise that in
Brighton residents are in such a positive frame of mind. The city has gradually
developed into a cosmopolitan hub on the south coast, with a vibrant social
scene. Brighton restaurants dominated the recent 2006 Observer Food Monthly
Awards and it is one of the top 10 destinations for visitors to the UK.
As for Belfast, there is no
doubt that the reduction in the level of violence in recent years has led to a
better quality of life and put its residents in a positive frame of mind about
the future. More economic investment is being attracted not least with a
growing influx of tourists and this is bound to have an impact on how
satisfied people in the area feel.
The news of Belfasts optimism
has been welcomed by Gerry Lennon, Chief Executive of the Belfast Visitor and
Convention Bureau. He said: We are delighted people think the future
is bright for Belfast because that is what we at BVCB firmly believe. Belfast
is well established as a destination of choice for both business and leisure
visitors, with 6.9 million people coming here in 2005 and it is wonderful to
know that local people also feel so positive about their city and its
future.
By grouping together or
clustering the most common responses to the life
satisfaction, locus of control and luck questions in the National Lottery Luck
Study, it was also possible to develop seven different Luck Personality
Profiles (LPP), which respondents could be identified with. The most common of
these LPPs accounting for over a quarter of the population (27 per cent)
are the Satisfied Instinctives, who believe their
luck derives from their own efforts and trusting their instincts. The smallest
group, at just 6 per cent of the population, are the Miserable
Minority who think negatively, are superstitious and do not consider
themselves lucky.
Dr Linda Papadopoulos has developed
an online quiz which not only tells you your luck type, but also provides top
tips on how to be luckier in life. To discover which personality type is your
closest match, log on to the website, www.luckometer.co.uk which launches on
Friday 4 August and will be live for rest of the month.
The study was conducted by ICM
Research (FieldWork UK) among 1,550 adults on 14-17 June. Approximately 50
interviews were conducted in each of the 31 towns and cities.

Pollard
Banknote Negotiates Laurel & Hardy Licensing
Agreement Winnipeg, Canada - Pollard Banknote Limited
Partnership ("Pollard Banknote") can now
offer lotteries yet another fine gaming option thanks to its latest licensing
arrangement. A multi-year deal with Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation gives
Pollard Banknote the worldwide rights to introduce the Laurel & Hardy
brand to the lottery industry. This license offers tremendous opportunities for
clients to serve up slices of sheer comedic genius to interested audiences
hungering for the taste of a pure classic mixed with a tantalizing ticket
design. "Laurel & Hardy comes as a welcome addition to Pollard
Banknote's growing inventory of properties aimed at targeting nostalgic players
with engaging, established, yet still-relevant game concepts" said Sina
Aiello, Director, Licensed Products. "In the comedy segment, there's no
question Laurel & Hardy remains at the forefront of the genre. It's a
robust, recognizable brand with an almost assured ability to attract an
especially coveted segment at the retail level."
In recent years, the Laurel & Hardy brand
has enjoyed a marked resurgence in popularity, becoming firmly entrenched in
the public's psyche. Primarily due to Madison Avenue's abiding push to elevate
the brand's profile, the pair's likenesses frequently appear in print and
television campaigns that generate millions of impressions annually. The
ongoing rotation of popular titles both in television syndication and on cable
television networks (like American Movie Classics, Turner Classic Movies, The
Hallmark Channel, and The Family Channel) further enhances the brand's
recognition factor. In addition, many films have now become readily available
for purchase on DVD. Fan and trivia websites flourish, and there's even an
official Laurel & Hardy appreciation society called the "Sons of
the Dessert," named after a fraternal society found in the popular 1933
Laurel & Hardy classic of the same name. Since the society's
inaugural meeting in New York in 1965, chapters have formed all across North
America and Europe, and even as far a-field as Australia. In a poll
released just last year, fellow comedians and comedy insiders pegged the
twosome as the seventh greatest comedy act ever, making them the most popular
duo on the list. Another first-place finish, this time in the December 2005
issue of Parade, saw nearly 7,000 respondents make their pick for the most
dynamic comedy duo ever. The beloved, bumbling pair beat out other legendary
comedy couplings like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello,
and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. "Even a cursory glance at the catalog
of features and shorts starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy reveals a
veritable treasure trove of instantly identifiable classics that have since
become deeply ingrained in the Western world's cultural milieu," said
Aiello. "And with titles like Hog Wild, Flying Deuces, Another Fine Mess,
Pack Up Your Troubles, Blotto, and Block Heads, the possibilities for some
especially exciting instant tickets seem nearly inexhaustible."
Translating this kind of momentum to the instant ticket retail environment
is the job of Pollard Banknote's talented in-house artists, whose principal
objective will be to capture the whimsy and magic of the public's decades-long
infatuation with these two brilliant comics. With 106 films spanning 30 years
to choose from, it's easy to imagine the end result being both amusing and
inspired-a compelling combination certain to attract lottery players from all
across the demographic spectrum. Pollard Banknote offers a turnkey solution
for licensed games, including ticket design and manufacturing, prize structure
consultation, merchandise selection and fulfillment, publicity and promotional
opportunities, and second chance draw process management (including all
customer service, Internet marketing, and post-game analysis).

Colorado Lottery Proceeds Hit Record
DENVER, Colorado, USA (August 15,
2006) -- Soon, new trails will be tread upon, new swings will fly, more acres
of wildlife habitat will be protected, and more open space vistas will be
preserved thanks for a record-breaking year for proceeds from the
Colorado Lottery. The Colorado Lottery
has concluded its fiscal year 2006 with sales that will result in $125.5
million to proceeds recipients. Most notably, a record $12.5 million will
go to address emergency health and safety issues at public schools.
Great Outdoors
Colorado received $50.2 million - or about 50% of proceeds, capped at
$35 million in 1992 dollars. The overflow of this money goes to under funded
public school districts to address facility and safety issues. Public schools
received $12.5 million in FY06.
Colorado Division of Parks
and Outdoor Recreation received $12.6 million - or about 10 percent of
proceeds. Colorados 41 State Parks use Lottery money for trail
construction and maintenance, land acquisition, equipment and facility
purchases.
The Conservation Trust
Fund received $50.2 million - or about 40% of proceeds. Conservation
Trust Fund distributes the money statewide to cities, towns, counties and
special districts on a per-capita basis.
Colorados
public schools and school children are big winners this year, said
Peggy Gordon, Colorado Lottery
Director. We were able to provide more than $12 million to the public
school general fund, which will help to address many critical facility and
safety issues. We are proud to say that is the most money we have ever given
back to schools.
Scratch tickets continued to be the
leader of the pack for the Colorado Lottery, with more than $293.8 million in
sales. Powerball followed with more than $119.8 million. Lotto had more than
$38.3 million in sales and Cash 5 had $16.9 million. Powerball experienced the
biggest growth, growing more than $38 million, or 48%, over Fiscal Year 2005.
Scratch sales grew by $11.1 million, or 4%, over FY05. Overall, sales for
Lottery games reached $468.8 million in FY06.
In addition to generating record
proceeds, the Lottery also decreased its operating costs to 6.7 percent of
sales from 7.7 percent in FY05. The decrease was lead by new contracts with
vendors and other cost-savings measures.
Proceeds from the Colorado
Lotterys games - Scratch, Lotto, Powerball, and Cash 5 - stay in Colorado
to improve the quality of life in the state. In Fiscal Year 2005, more than
$103.7 million was returned to Colorado, compared to $125.5 in FY06. Since the
lottery started in 1983, more than $1.7 billion has been returned to the
state.
