GTECH Announces Fiscal Year 2007 First Quarter
Results
WEST GREENWICH, Rhode Island (June 22,
2006) -- GTECH Holdings Corporation (NYSE:
GTK) today announced earnings for its first quarter of fiscal year 2007, which
ended May 27, 2006.
We had a successful quarter
across all three GTECH vertical markets Lottery, Gaming Solutions, and
Commercial Services, said GTECH President and CEO W. Bruce Turner.
We completed the industrys fastest lottery system implementation
in North Carolina in 58 days with more than 5,000 terminals. Gaming Solutions
secured its first significant placement of the new WinWave gaming machine
platform in two government jurisdictions. POLCARD experienced a 31
percent increase in bankcard acquiring turnover, and BillBird saw an 86 percent
increase in bill payment and prepaid top-up transaction volume, from the same
period last year.

 |
We are pleased with the
performance of the business, despite the difficult quarter-over-quarter
comparisons created by nonrecurring events in both periods, said GTECH
Senior Vice President and CFO Jaymin B. Patel. The fundamentals of
our business remain strong, and we are well positioned to capture new
opportunities in each of the markets we serve.
Operating Results Revenues for the first quarter
of fiscal 2007 were $315.9 million, compared to revenues of $326.4 million in
the first quarter of fiscal 2006. Net income was $45.7 million, or $0.35
per diluted share in the first quarter of fiscal 2007, compared to net income
of $54.8 million, or $0.43 per diluted share for the same period last year. For
the quarter, service revenues were $290.2 million, comparable to the first
quarter of last fiscal year, despite a year-over-year reduction of
approximately $12.6 million of revenues from Brazil, which was principally
related to the court-ordered return of revenues withheld in fiscal year 2005.
Excluding the higher revenues from Brazil in fiscal 2006, service revenues for
the first quarter of fiscal year 2007 increased $11.4 million or approximately
4 percent year-over-year, driven by the continued strength of the U.S.
lottery market. Product sales for the quarter were $25.7 million, compared to
$35.0 million in the first quarter of last year. Service margins were 39.4%,
reflecting lower revenues from Brazil. Product margins increased 3.1 percentage
points to 41.4% in the most recent quarter, reflecting a change in product
mix. The first quarter results include one-time costs of $6.8 million
associated with the pending transaction with Lottomatica S.p.A. Excluding
transaction-related costs, the Company would have reported net income of $52.5
million and fully diluted earnings per share of $0.40. This compares to net
income of $46.8 million and fully diluted earnings per share of $0.36,
excluding the higher revenues from Brazil in the first quarter of last fiscal
year.
Cash Flow and Investments During the first quarter
of fiscal 2007, the Company generated $102.3 million of cash from operations.
This cash was principally used to fund $80.2 million of systems, equipment, and
other assets relating to contracts, including new systems in North Carolina,
Arizona, and Washington State, and to pay cash dividends of $10.8 million. At
May 27, 2006, the Company had $185.2 million of cash and cash equivalents and
$323.1 million of short-term investment securities on hand. At the end of
the first quarter of fiscal 2007, the Company had $499.5 million available
under its senior revolving credit facility.
First Quarter Highlights
In the first quarter of fiscal year 2007,
GTECH continued to execute against its strategic objectives of maintaining and
expanding the core lottery business, winning new customers, and growing
perimeter businesses.
Domestically, GTECH was selected by the
Virginia Lottery to provide a new central
system, terminals, an IP wireless communications network, and ongoing services
under a seven-year integrated services contract.
The Company also celebrated the success of
the fastest, and smoothest, instant ticket launch in GTECH history in
North Carolina on March 30, 2006. On
May 30, 2006, GTECH launched North Carolinas online game offering,
Powerball.
Internationally, GTECH signed a three-year
contract extension with the Beijing Welfare
Lottery Center to provide a new central system, terminals, and ongoing
software licensing and support. In Brazil, Caixa Economica Federal approved a
90-day contract extension with the Company.
GTECHs subsidiary
Spielo delivered 540 WinWave
terminals to Svenska Spel in Sweden, and
300 WinWave terminals to Atlantic Lottery
Corporation in Canada.
Also during the quarter, GTECH launched
Pick n Play in Illinois. Pick n Play is the
Companys new game concept designed to combine the appeal of instant
gratification and multiple chances to win with the security and integrity of an
online game. Since the inaugural launch in March 2006, sales in Illinois have
topped the $11 million mark.
The state of Illinois was also the first
in the United States to receive GTECHs ISYS Text-to-Speech (TTS)
application that enables a visually-impaired retailers personal computer
to audibly read the text that is displayed on the ISYS
terminal. In effect, the ISYS can now talk to the visually-impaired
lottery clerk. The Text-to-Speech application is easily configurable for all
ISYS terminals currently in the field worldwide. GTECH will work with customers
on an individual basis to determine how best to implement the application for
visually-impaired retailers in other jurisdictions.
We remain committed to helping
customers drive revenue through new content and new technology,
continued Mr. Turner. With the addition of Connie Laverty as
GTECHs Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, we will
continue to identify market trends and long-range market opportunities for
product development, content development, sales, and potential
acquisitions.
Other Business Developments After the close of the
quarter, GTECH shareholders voted to approve the previously-announced merger
agreement providing for the acquisition of GTECH by
Lottomatica S.p.A., at a special
meeting of shareholders. Subject to the satisfaction or waiver of the remaining
conditions set forth in the merger agreement, the proposed merger is expected
to be completed in mid-2006. If the proposed merger is completed, GTECH will
become an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Lottomatica and each outstanding
share of GTECH common stock will be converted into the right to receive $35.00
in cash, without interest.

Lottery
Fiscal Year Proceeds Set All-Time Record at $260.3 Million
MISSOURI, USA (June 15, 2006) -- Mega Scratchers games and
super-sized jackpots helped the Missouri
Lottery set record proceeds during fiscal year 2006, coming in 19 percent
higher than the last fiscal year transfers and 13 percent higher than the
previous record $230.3 million set in fiscal year 2004. Todays final
monthly proceeds transfer to public education was $23,097,875, bringing the
total proceeds transferred to Missouris public education during FY06 to
$260.3 million. The June transfer is based on ticket sales in May.
"The Missouri Lottery has witnessed
dramatic growth in the past 20 years, especially in the past four years,"
said Larry Jansen, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. "Lottery
proceeds have gone from $80 million in fiscal year 1987 to $260.3 million in
fiscal year 2006."
Jansen attributed much of the past
years success to record Powerball
jackpots and growth in Scratchers games sales.
"We introduced two mega
Scratchers games during the past year, and together, theyve added more
than $1.7 million a week to our sales. These games have the highest payouts
weve ever offered, so while the state is bringing in more proceeds,
winners are taking home more than ever, too. Its a win-win
situation."
Jansen said that since the first
"mega" Scratchers games was introduced in September 2005, proceeds each
month have been more than $21 million.
In addition to Scratchers tickets, Jansen
noted that the Powerball jackpot surpassed $300 million two times during fiscal
year 2006; the first time the jackpot set a new record on Oct. 19, 2005, coming
in at $340 million, and it broke that record on Feb. 18 when it reached $365
million. As a result of the record jackpot, the Lottery also experienced record
sales in February of $94.1 million.
"We were also fortunate enough to award
the largest jackpot won in Missouri during this past fiscal year," Jansen
noted. "Thirteen state employees from the St. Louis area claimed a $224.2
million jackpot in April. That generated a tremendous amount of excitement for
our games."
Jansen added that while the past fiscal
year was phenomenal for Powerball, it will be hard to match during the next
fiscal year.
Proceeds from Missouri Lottery ticket
sales in fiscal year 2006 were used for a variety of public education programs
including: the Foundation Program, the A+ Schools Program, special education
excess costs, the Vocational Rehabilitation program, the Early-Grade Literacy
program and capital improvements at several colleges and universities around
the state. For a complete list of programs funded in FY06, visit the
Lotterys Web site at www.molottery.com.
From the start of the Lottery in
January 1986 through fiscal year 1993, Lottery proceeds of $542,540,033 went to
the states General Revenue Fund. In August 1992, Missouri voters approved
an amendment to direct all Lottery proceeds to public education, and since July
1993, when the law change took effect, the Lottery has contributed more than
$2.1 billion to the states public education system.
Each year, the proceeds are allocated by
the governor and the states General Assembly during the annual
appropriation process. These funds represent approximately 3.8 percent of the
total annual funding required for Missouris public education system.
"In addition to record sales and
profits, we also set a new record low - the lowest percentage of sales (5
percent) spent on operating costs in the agencys 20-year history,"
Jansen added.
For each dollar spent on the Lottery, more
than 95 cents goes back to the citizens of the state in one form or another.
Approximately 61.6 cents is returned to players as prizes, 27.3 cents goes to
the states public education programs, 6.1 cents pays for retailers
commissions, incentives and bonuses, and 5 cents is used for administrative
costs.

Lotto Hamburg Cooperating with INTRALOT S.A.
- Pilot project POSEIDON
to renew the lottery's central system - More service with Greek software
HAMBURG, Germany (June 15, 2006) -- The
state lottery company, Lotto Hamburg, will be the first German lottery company,
regarding a lottery's central system, to coorporate with
INTRALOT S.A., a Greek supplier of
lottery technology. The contract for developing a German version of the
lottery's central system, Lotos, developed by INTRALOT, including a subsequent
and extensive practice test, has been signed. Lotto Hamburg acted in response
to the Greek proposal of adjusting this standard software, which is used
worldwide, to German requirements within a limited time frame in a pilot
project at no cost for Lotto Hamburg. This was preceded by a thorough
examination of the relevant facts and legal circumstances, in particular of the
legal principles governing public contract awards.
According to Siegfried Spies, Managing
Director of Lotto Hamburg, this is undoubtedly the right step at the right
moment: "The central system and technology used in Lotto Hamburg's point of
sales have been in place since the introduction of online-Lotto and are already
more than ten years old - an advanced age for IT-technical products. Our
objective is to become technologically innovative and flexible whilst
continuously providing absolute security in the processes of the games
business. On that basis we have repositioned ourselves strategically in terms
of IT. As a small lottery company, it is essential for us that our business
processes and infrastructure are efficient and effective. For that reason it is
important for us that the software products we use are available and further
developed on the market as standardised products; individual adjustments of
individual solutions simply would be too costly and time-consuming for
us."
At present, Lotto Hamburg is defining
detailed technical specifications for the central system software and terminal
software to be developed by Intralot. It is of particular importance that the
new central system complies with German requirements imposed by the technical
agreements of the German Lotto and Totoblock, by the certification regulations
of ISO 27001 and of the World Lottery Association (WLA), by German statutes,
and by Lotto Hamburg's rules of participation.
The new system is scheduled to go online
in the first half of the year 2007 and prove itself under real conditions.
After conclusion of the pilot project,
Lotto Hamburg will commence tendering procedures for the central system
estimated to take place in the second half of the year 2007.
Spies comments: "No great efforts of
persuasion were required when Intralot presented their proposal to us and asked
us to take part at no cost in the development of the German version of Lotos.
Initially, of course, we will have to wait for the results of the evaluation of
the pilot phase.
If the pilot project runs successfully
another product which in every respect will be highly interesting providing
future-orientated IT-strategy may be able to be offered to the German lottery
market."
Lotto Hamburg is the state lottery of the
Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and has been organising officially licensed
gambling, such as LOTTO 6aus49, GlücksSpirale, KENO and the legal sports
betting, ODDSET and Toto, since more than 50 years. In the financial year of
2005, Hamburg's lottery generated 213.6m euros in stakes at approx. 530 point
of sales and via the internet gaming offer at www.lotto-hh.de.
INTRALOT intends to gather experience with
the pilot project that is free for Lotto Hamburg and to get a foothold in the
German lottery market. The Greek supplier of gaming systems and organizer of
lotteries and sports betting games was established in 1992. The company is
listed at Athens Stock Exchange and has generated a turnover of 523m euros in
the previous financial year.

New York Lottery Numbers Game Sets Record Pays More Than $8.3
Million to Twenty-Five Thousand Players in One Day
SCHENECTADY, New York (June 19, 2006) --
New York Lottery Daily Numbers players had
a major pay day last week winning more than $8.3 million playing the 4-4-4 and
1-2-3 number combinations on the Thursday, June 15th midday and evening
drawings.
 |
The amazing $8.3 million payout
is a new record for the New York Lottery Daily Numbers game, said New
York Lottery Director Nancy A. Palumbo. The popular number
combinations of 4-4-4 and 1-2-3 were drawn during Numbers Bonus Week which
means not only did New Yorkers win big, but they also took home a 600 to 1
payout. That represents an increase in prizes of over 20 percent.
During the midday drawing last Thursday,
9,524 players who picked the 4-4-4 combination won $4,688,940 when their
numbers came in. In the evening, 16,236 winners who played the numbers 1-2-3
walked away with $3,695,200. Number selections are usually capped when they
reach a $5 million payout liability, but neither of these popular number
combinations had been sold out for the day.
The $8.3 million payday last week beat the
record set on August 26, 2002 when the midday 6-6-6 combination was drawn
paying out $1.18 million and the evening 2-2-2 winning numbers paid out nearly
$5 million, setting the former daily prize payout record at $6.18 million.
The Daily Numbers game was introduced to
New Yorkers on September 8, 1980. During fiscal year 2005-2006, sales on the
Daily Numbers game reached $827 million, generating $333 million for education.
Since it was launched in 1980, the Daily Numbers game has generated more than
$5.25 billion for primary and secondary education on sales of over $15 billion.
The New York Lottery, the largest lottery
in the country and the sixth largest in the world, has generated more than $29
billion in revenue to help support education in New York State, including a
record $2.2 billion in fiscal year 2005-2006 on revenues of $6.8 billion. For

Player City Hall of Fame inducts first Members; Internet Club
Celebrates Anniversary
LANSING, Michigan, USA (June 19, 2006) -
The Michigan Lottery has inducted 100
loyal Lottery players into its Player City Hall of Fame. Inductees into
the Hall of Fame earned the honor by accumulating the most "Player City
Points" during the past year through Player City, the Lottery's
Internet-based VIP club.
"When we first discussed the viability
of an interactive website for our players over a year ago, we had no idea it
would be the overwhelming success that it now is," Lottery Commissioner
Gary Peters said. "We have Player City "residents" from all over the
state who are enjoying exclusive member benefits and contests that a year ago
weren't available."

 |
The Player City website, found at
www.playercity.net, was launched in
June, 2005. Player City members earn points for various on-site
activities and then "redeem" their points later for members-only
contests. Additionally, points accumulated put residents in the running
for Hall of Fame honors. The Hall showcases Player City's point leaders
and provides a chance for residents to see how their point totals match up
against all residents. Point totals are updated every 5 minutes.
Additionally, Michigan Lottery players now
have their own place on the web to brag about their luckiest experience with
the Michigan Lottery. The "Lucky Me!" section of the Player City website
allows members to contribute their personal story for all members to see, and
earn 2,000 Player City points in the process.
For example, member Linda W. writes, "I
received a coupon from Player City that when you purchase a $10 instant ticket,
you receive a $5.00 instant ticket "FREE". So, I lost on my $5 instant
ticket but I won $200 on the $10 instant ticket. I was so happy I told my
husband that he should become a member too!"
