and apply it to future opportunities.
This annual NASPL
conference brings together delegates from the more than 50 lottery
organizations in North America. This is the one time every year when we can

consumers; Dr. William Eadington will give us the "big picture" of where
gambling is headed worldwide; noted futurist Glen Hiemstra will discuss how

to tell us how people react to these changes and how that will affect our
business.

formats and topics. We'll hear from experts on the retail industry, problem
gambling and effective Web sites; learn about lottery history, how to optimize
our product mix and how to evaluate the success of our advertising; discuss the
new challenges lotteries are being asked to undertake, how lotteries have
responded to radical organizational change and how to best respond to a crisis;
and much, much more.

Texas
Lottery® Warns Houston-Area Residents Latin Lotto Scam On The Rise
Again
AUSTIN, Texas, USA (April 14, 2005) - A woman in the
Bellaire area of Houston lost $9,800 to two Hispanic females who sold a
supposed "winning" Texas Lottery® ticket to her claiming they
couldn't redeem the prize because they were not American citizens.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of a grocery store
located at Bellaire Boulevard and South Rice.
"The crooks are back and scamming innocent citizens with
phony lottery tickets and bogus sob stories about not being able to claim their
alleged prizes," said Texas Lottery
Commission Executive Director Reagan E. Greer. "Houston always seems to
get hit hardest and citizens should be on notice that these con artists are out
there and waiting to make an easy buck."
Greer said there are several key points to remember when
someone approaches attempting to sell a Texas Lottery ticket that allegedly
carries a prize.
"Don't believe them if they tell you they can't claim the
prize because they are from another country," Greer said. "You don't
have to be a U.S. citizen to claim a prize. Also, never believe them when they
tell you they need cash to claim a Lottery prize. You never have to pay money
to claim a Lottery prize. Get away from the con artists as quickly as you can,
don't give them money, and don't get into a car with them."
The perpetrators often try to have their victim drive them
to a bank.
The scam is usually perpetrated by at least three people and
targets elderly Hispanics. The incident in Bellaire may have included four
people, according local law enforcement.
Con artists look for victims in the parking lots of a mall,
a grocery store or a so-called "big-box" store with a high volume of
traffic.
"If you suspect that you or someone you know has been
approached by these scam artists, call the police immediately and warn those
around you,' Greer said. "If a stranger's story sounds too good to be
true, it's because it is. For those people interested in having a Texas Lottery
ticket, the place to get one is from an authorized retailer, not someone on the
street with a sad-sack story who says they need money right then and
there."

Remaining Prizes
Served Up Fast And Easy At Missouri Lottery's Web Site
MISSOURI, USA (April 16, 2005) -- Scratchers players now
have an easier way to view and compare remaining prize information for
Missouri Lottery Scratchers games at
www.Molottery.com.
Now on one list, players can compare the remaining prizes in
the top four prize levels of each game, along with the total cash prizes
remaining for that game, with all other games that are currently selling in
retail locations. For a more detailed comparison of this information, players
also can chose to sort the list by game name, game number, start date or ticket
price.
|
 |
"Weve taken the information and presented it in a
new way," said Gary Gonder, the lottery's Director of Communications.
"Now players can see in an instant, which games have just
started selling, are no longer being distributed to retailers or are nearing
their expiration date.
"Since as many as 30 to 40 games can be selling at one
time, a Scratchers player who prefers to play $5 games, for example, can sort
the list by ticket price. Once the page reloads, the list will be reorganized
with all $5 games listed together for an easy comparison," Gonder said.
By clicking on the game names in this list, players are
directed to a more detailed page about that specific game. Information on this
page includes all prize levels listed for that game and corresponding remaining
prize information, total cash prizes won and remaining for that game, how to
play instructions, a graphic of the game ticket and average chances of winning
a prize in that specific game. As prizes are claimed for each game-which for
most of the newer games is almost daily-each page will show the day and time
the information for that game was last updated at the bottom-left corner of the
page.
"Among other state lottery Web sites, this is one of the
most comprehensive lists available to Scratchers players," Gonder said.
"We want to keep our players as informed as possible, and we feel the Web is
an excellent way to do that."
