Biography: Guy Simonis
Guy Simonis was born in the Netherlands and he emigrated
to Canada in 1954. Guy is fluent in Dutch and English. In 1974, he was
asked to lead the formation and later headed, the Western Canada Lottery
Foundation, a Canadian regional State lottery organization that encompassed the
four Western Canadian Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British
Columbia. In 1985, Simonis headed the British Columbia Lottery when it
broke away from its 10-year association with the Foundation. Simonis retired in
1997. And when the time came to honor him at his retirement, none of the
instruments in the traditional repertoire seemed to be quite important enough
for such a bigger-than-life figure, and a new honor had to be created, the Guy
Simonis Lifetime Achievement Award. At WLA 2000 in Glasgow, new WLA
President Reidar Nordby Jr. duly presented the The Guy Simonis Lifetime
Achievement Award to a beaming Guy Simonis is a leading figure in
the gaming industry.
- President of the North American Association of
State and Provincial Lotteries (1985-87), the first Canadian to be so honored.
- President of the International Association of
Lotteries (AILE) (1995-1996).
- President the International Lotto and Toto
Organization (INTERTOTO) (1997-1999).
- Founding President and honorary member of the World
Lottery Association. (2000)
Simonis introduced an
industry-training program called the Erewhon State Lottery. Originally intended
as a one-time study for lottery directors, the program became the premier
training program of the lottery industry. Over 600 middle management personnel
on five continents have participated in the program. During his more than 30
years in this business Simonis spoke regularly at Conferences and Congress.
With his friend Jean-Marc Lafaille, in November 2005 he published a book on
gaming Dissected and re-assembled - An analysis of gaming.
