The Golden Casket Lottery Corp. is
Australia's second oldest lottery (established in 1916 to raise funds to house
World 1 veterans). It has been operating in Queensland for the last 75 years
providing entertaining games of chance to millions of Queenslanders. The
Corporation markets the well-known brands of Gold Lotto, Oz Lotto, Powerball,
Instant Scratch-Its, The Pools and Casket. The organisation is a
commercially-focussed and marketing-driven Corporation which is one of the most
successful businesses in Queensland. Golden Casket has completed the
corporatisation process which has positioned it well for the competitive
challenges of the future. A Government-owned Corporation, Golden Casket has
an annual turnover of almost $650 million and returns almost $200 million to
the Queensland Government. These funds are used to support a variety of
community projects which benefit the people of this state. The Queensland
Golden Casket draw lottery originated in 1916 and was administered by the
Entertainments Committee of the Queensland Patriotic Fund. This committee was
responsible for conducting six draws of the lottery up until 1920 when the
State Government of the day assumed control of the art union. Queensland's
Golden Casket has the distinction of being the first lottery in Australia to be
entirely administered and controlled by a government. Initially, cash prizes
were not permitted by law. Consequently, caskets containing gold were offered
as prizes. These were immediately bought back from winners for the cash value
of the prize. The word "casket" (being a small box of fine workmanship for
jewellery and precious items) was thus enshrined in the name of the Queensland
lottery office.
