SPC Plans Rs 85
Crore Adspend For Online Lottery NEW DELHI, India (June 20,
2003) -- An advertising budget of over Rs 85 crore has been earmarked for
Dhandhanadhan, the online lottery being launched next month by
Shapoorji Pallonji and Co (SPC). The media plan has been split between
vernacular and the English media, depending on the game to be promoted. SPC is
the single largest private shareholder in Tata Sons and is launching this
business through Dhandhanadhan Infotainment Pvt Ltd (DIPL), a company floated
to manage this business. It will be marketing the Arunachal Pradesh and
Meghalaya state lotteries. Dhandhanadhan will be launched
simultaneously in all the 14 states where online lottery is permitted. A
turnover of Rs 1,000 crore has been targeted during the current financial year
itself by the company. Online game biz
turnover may top Rs 5,000 cr KOLKATA, India People who
have long since tried their luck with paper lotteries are gradually migrating
to online gaming. If the current trends are any indication, almost the
entire clientele of the paper lottery business will shift to the online lottery
segment within the next four to five years, according to Mr Rajan Kaicker,
Chief Executive of DhanDhanaDhan Infotainment Pvt. Ltd, the online gaming
initiative from the Forbes Group. Speaking to newspersons here while on a
visit to announce the launch of the company's first online game, Tri Dhan, Mr
Kaicker said the online gaming business in India had surpassed Rs 1,000 crore
in its very first year of operations. In the current fiscal, this is expected
to grow to at least Rs 5,000 crore. "I expect that in the next four to
five years, almost the entire paper lottery business will shift to the online
segment," he said, adding that the size of the domestic paper lottery
business was Rs 50,000 crore at present. According to him, the growth of the
online business would be facilitated by several factors. First, transparency in
online gaming would propel the migration from paper lotteries to online
lotteries. Second, the excitement of online gaming would attract new entrants
to lotteries. And, finally, online lotteries would attract people who have
always been inclined to participate in paper lotteries but have hesitated to do
so because they had reservations on transparency in the operations of paper
lotteries.
