Convenience
Stores ask OLG to Immediately Remove Lottery Terminals From Bad Retailers
TORONTO, Ontario, Canada
(February 5, 2009) -- The Ontario Convenience Stores Association (OCSA)
followed the Ontario and Gaming Corporation's
(OLG) release of a detailed study of lottery winnings by 'insiders' with a
call to immediately remove lottery terminals and tickets from those who try to
cheat customers or the OLG.
"As OLG CEO Kelly
McDougald said in her news conference yesterday, the majority of lottery
retailers are honest. But the fact that more retailers than we thought may have
defrauded the system is disturbing news and frankly makes the tens of thousands
of honest, hard-working people in our industry angry," said Dave Bryans,
President of the OCSA. "If this small minority of
retailers don't act with integrity and to the highest standards of fairness and
trust, they should not have the privilege of selling lottery tickets,"
added Bryans. "We fully support and encourage action by the OLG to remove
terminals and tickets from retailers who are found to abuse the trust between
the OLG and the public." The convenience store
industry is a steward for the lottery business in Ontario. Ontario's 10,000
convenience stores sell over 700 million lottery tickets worth over $1.4
billion every year. The vast majority of these are honest small business people
who support their families by serving neighbourhoods in communities all across
the province. "We welcome the findings in the OLG's
report and firmly believe that anything that can help us improve the integrity
of the system is a good thing. That includes
the scrutiny of the OPP. Anyone who tries to cheat or steal from the system
should pay the price", said Bryans. OCSA intends
to continue working with OLG and will be discussing with its members what else
each can do to help OLG as it works to improve the system.

KEBA AG
Continues to Focus on Internationalization; New Subsidiary Established in
Turkey ANKARA, Turkey (February
11, 2009) -- With an export ratio of 76 percent, the international market is
very decisive for the business success of the automation specialist from Linz.
The company's focused internationalization strategy in the previous years was a
significant contributor to the success. At the end of
2008, a new subsidiary was established in Turkey in addition to the
subsidiaries in Germany, the USA, China, the Czech Republic and Romania.
The new subsidiary already has three employees. In the
first year, the focus of the team will be on sales, business development and
customer project management. Commercial Partner
With Enormous Potential
Turkey counts as the most
important commercial partner with enormous potential in Europe. Measuring
814,578 sq.m. Turkey is approximately twice as large as Germany and with about
70 million inhabitants it has a population more than ten times that of Austria.
For the past few years the country has been
experiencing a boost to growth even, surprisingly, outstripping that of the
2004 leader China. Since then the Turkish economy has been experiencing a more
modest growth but still, according to differing estimates, more than double the
EU average. Turkey is a strategically important
country for KEBA due to its widely developed
banking market. The Turkish banking market is known for its modern
infrastructure: it allows for the shift of routine banking services to
self-service very easily. In the past several years, modern central systems and
host structures as well as the large technical affinity of the Turkish people
allowed the number of available banking machines in the country to increase by
leaps and bounds. "Above all, we see a great
potential here for our cash dispensers with Cash-Cycle technology", says
CEO of the KEBA AG Gerhard Luftensteiner. With these
self-service terminals, the bank notes are deposited in bundles, checked for
authenticity and placed in cassettes. If the next customer initiates a cash
withdrawal, these bank notes are issued again. A closed cash loop results
whereby the devices feature a very high availability. "Customers are thus
able to realize considerable savings in cash handling and the personnel
resources can be freed up for profit-making sales activities!
explains Gerhard Luftensteiner. KEBA Postal
Automation Solutions Revolutionize Logistics "We believe our KePol postal automation solution will be
successful in Turkey especially in the large economic centers,
added Gerhard Luftensteiner. KePol self-service
parcel machines have revolutionized logistics by automating the last mile in
the postal and logistics business. This automation
solution is the future of postal delivery - here the experts agree. The
demographic shift and the increase in e-commerce are presenting new challenges
(and opportunities) for logistics companies. True, goods can be ordered today
around the clock but their rapid delivery proves to be increasingly difficult,
particularly in the large economic centers such as Ankara, Istanbul or Izmir,
to name just a few. Available 24/7
Significant costs and
delays arise when a postal recipient cannot be reached. With KePol, KEBA has
reacted to these challenges by making the pick-up and return of mailings
possible 24/7. KePol thus realizes clear competitive
advantages not only through time and cost-efficient delivery but also through
high customer satisfaction. A classic win-win situation for postal and
logistics service providers and their customers.
"KePol from KEBA is the package automation solution
with the world's largest installation base. In Germany, there are now more than
1,000 machines installed that are known under the Packstation name. More than
1,000,000 customers already use the free service of the Deutsche Post World Net
with an increasing trend." adds Gerhard Luftensteiner.
The Austrian automation specialist KEBA is also a complete
solution provider to the Austrian Postal Service and operates test locations
and pilot programs in various European countries. In Denmark, 60 machines are
already successfully in use. KeWin - Lottery
Machines Turkey is also an interesting market for
lottery solutions, an area in which KEBA has been successful for years.
"Since there are only about 4,000 lottery terminals in
all of Turkey and with the privatization of the lottery market being imminent,
we see several opportunities for us in this field as well" says Gerhard
Luftensteiner, CEO of the KEBA AG. The KEBA AG has
been continuously beating the global competition for years with its lottery
solutions featuring high reliability and innovative scanning technology.
Not only the Austrian lottery for whom the KEBA AG is the
exclusive supplier, but also the world's top-selling Spanish lottery relies on
quality made in Austria. With roughly 10,000 KeWin devices, the world's largest
lottery market is now almost exclusively being supplied with "made in
Austria" lottery terminals. KeWin Lottery
Solutions KEBA has a lottery terminal family that
can cover all requirements.

The KEBA KeWin lottery
terminal family is the point-of-sale self-service solution for all types of
games, instant ticket validation and prize checking. Agencies with medium to high lottery slip volumes need a
really fast lottery terminal. Here, the KeWin multimedia is the perfect
solution with its unmatched speed and precision. The
KeWin micro is, without a doubt, the smallest lottery terminal on the market
that offers full functionality - from lottery slip scanning to network
communication to the printing-out of receipts and user interaction via
different displays. The KeWin terminal family is based
on a standardized technology and software solution. This facilitates the
individual and commercial terminal mix in the field. The KeWin terminal
software with its comprehensive range of functions and its ergonomic device
user interface covers all requirements of modern lottery applications.

Dutch National
Postcode Lottery Donates 1 Million to UNHCR
SCHEVENINGEN, The Netherlands (February 9, 2009)
The Dutch National Postcode Lottery has
donated one million Euros to support the global work of the UN refugee agency
during the coming year.
At a gala event last
Thursday in the seaside resort of Scheveningen, Marieke van Schaik, head of
charity projects at the National Postcode Lottery, handed a symbolic cheque to
Judith Kumin, UNHCR's representative to the European Union.
"On behalf of the refugees and internally displaced
people, we thank the Lottery for this much appreciated support," Kumin
said. "In times of economic uncertainty such unearmarked and predictable
donations are particularly crucial to continue fulfilling our mandate to the
benefit of refugees." It was the seventh year in a
row that the National Postcode Lottery, Holland's main charity lottery, has
donated substantial finds to UNHCR. Last year, it gave 1.6 million euros in
unearmarked support. This was mainly used to help refugees in the Great Lakes
region of Africa. The National Postcode Lottery has
also been a generous private sector donor for earmarked projects. Last year,
UNHCR and three Dutch partners completed a mine clearance project in South
Sudan with funding from the Lottery. At Thursday's
annual event, the Lottery donated 244 million euros, or half its gross income,
to 66 organizations active in the fields of development cooperation, human
rights, nature preservation and social cohesion. Dutch Prime Minister
Balkenende was the guest speaker at the ceremony. SOURCE: UNHCR.

Loto, France's
Number One Game BOULOGNE, France
(February 2, 2009) -- On February 2, 2009 Christophe Blanchard-Dignac, Chairman and
CEO of La Française des Jeux,
presented in Paris the company's 2008 activity results and projects for
2009. He stated: For the French, La
Française des Jeux is the embodiment of gaming: in 2008 two out of three
French people played our games, namely 29 million players. As demonstrated by
the moderate rise in our lottery products sales (+0.9%), which account for
three-quarters of total sales in our 38,000 points of sale, the French have
shown their wiseness in an economic environment that has become increasingly
difficult. Despite such a background, the innovations recently introduced have
been highly appreciated, as evidenced by the development of sports betting and
online games, as well as the unequivocal success of the new Loto, which has
regained the status of France's most popular game.
2008: 0.9% growth in our core activity, total sales of
9.2bn, down slightly by 1.1%
29.2 million customers,
increased customer loyalty, and moderate stakes - this sums up year 2008 for La
Française des Jeux. While the gaming sector in France saw sales fall by
3.5%, La Française des Jeux's sales in 2008 were only down 1.1%, from
9.306 billion euros in 2007 to 9.203 billion euros in 2008. Online sales, whose
growth reflects the changes in French consumer habits, now represents 2.4% of
the company's sales, compared to 1.6% in 2007. Draw
and instant games, which account for three-quarters of La Française des
Jeux's total sales, rose by 0.9%, reflecting French players' responsible
attitude towards gaming. The marked fall in Rapido
sales (-18.7%) is mainly due to the introduction of the nationwide smoking ban
in bars. As for sports betting, their good performance demonstrate the
company's desire and ability to affirm its position as a key player in this
gaming category. Overall, while showing balanced
results, La Française des Jeux's diversified product portfolio stood up
well in a difficult economic climate in 2008. The new Loto is proving highly
successful The new Loto, which was
launched on 6 October 2008, has fulfilled expectations with sales up 5.4%, and
an average of 7.8 million wagers per week. The additional Monday draw has
firmly established itself; it currently accounts for 21% of weekly sales. Over
its first 13 weeks the new Loto awarded 11 jackpot
winners with prizes of over 2 million euros, as many as in 40 weeks for the old
Loto game. Sports betting have proved very successful
accounting now for 7% of sales The 65% increase in
sports betting, that doubled oddset games sales, has enabled this segment to
rise its share from 4% in 2007 to 7% of total company sales in 2008. This
result, which was boosted by major sporting events (Euro 2008, the Olympic
Games), is also accounted for by the development of the offer: the simplicity
for players to bet, the greater choice of disciplines (football, rugby,
basketball, Formula 1 and tennis) plus widening of the range during the Olympic
Games (handball, swimming, athletics and judo) and increased winnings (+7% per
stake on average).
Fdjeux.com is
France's leading gaming site 2008 saw
confirmation of the development of online gaming: sales made via the multimedia
distribution channel rose by 48% (219 million euros in 2008 compared to 148
million euros in 2007), and now account for 2.4% of the company's sales.
729,000 players purchased games on La Française des Jeux's Internet site
in 2008, i.e. 166,000 more than in 2007. In 2008, 54% of Internet users knew of
the FDJeux.com site and 79% of overall online players played on it.
As a France's leading local sales network and
leading partner of French sport in France, La Française des Jeux
stressed its social commitment La
Française des Jeux's network remains the leading sales network for
gaming in France, with 10 million people visiting daily its 38,000 points of
sale. In 2008, 785 million prizes were distributed and 99 winners were awarded
over one million euros. La Française des Jeux's
social commitment reached a new threshold in 2008: 225 million euros were
granted to Sports for All in France (amount allocated to the
National Centre for the Development of Sport), while La Française des
Jeux's Foundation strengthened its actions in the field of sports patronage and
charitable donations, most notably through initiatives conducted in partnership
with the French Red Cross. 2009: strengthening of
the company's sales network and preparing for the opening of online
betting In 2009 La Française des Jeux plans
to strengthen its gaming model in order to serve players, sport and society
interest. There are 3 priorities in this area: reinforcing the sales network,
focusing on the dynamism of draw games segment, and preparing for the
controlled opening of online betting market. La
Française des Jeux plans to invest over 140m in its sales network
between 2009 and 2012
La Française des
Jeuxs local sales network is at the heart of its special relationship
with the French citizens. In order to strengthen the dynamism of this
relationship, the company intends to keep on investing in its network with
respect to both equipment and services, in particular IT devices and services,
with a budget of over 140m to be invested between 2009 and 2012. In 2009,
the biggest ADSL network in France will be expanded still further, to reach
28,000 equipped points of sale; 100% of real-time points of sale will be
equipped with self-service game receipt verification systems; the company also
plans to open 650 new Loto points of sale in its network.
Illustrating the dynamism of draw games, Loto
has regained its position as Frances favourite game
4 key points for 2009
- Loto has once more become La
Française des Jeux's number 1 game and Frances favourite
game.
- Euro Millions, a game that links
together ten European lotteries, will celebrate its 5th anniversary.
- A draw game will be
launched.
- The worldwide game project
scheduled for circa 2011.
Preparing for the
opening of online betting: odds betting games sales doubled in 2008, new
products and services in 2009 La
Française des Jeuxs goal is to establish itself as a standard
reference in the online gaming sector. It joins forces to become the leader
with a gaming model anticipated on an increasing controlled framework of the
market. The first stage in its preparation has proved conclusive, as while
remaining loyal to its values, La Française des Jeux has doubled its
odds betting sales (+150% for Internet sales). Armed
with its players trust and high capacity for action, La Française
des Jeux is developing new offers and services in 2009 to accompany the
evolution of sports betting games. 2008

Increased
Commission, Exciting New Scratchcards And Bigger Packs Underline Camelots
Commitment To Retailers New measures and games to help National Lottery
retailers go from strength to strength WATFORD, UK (February 10, 2009) --
National Lottery operator
Camelot is unveiling a range of
retailer-friendly measures as part of its plans to build an even better and
brighter National Lottery for players and retailers alike.
Having successfully rolled out its new communications and
terminal network to over 27,500 National Lottery outlets throughout the UK, and
at a time when retailer margins in some categories are declining, Camelot has
underlined its commitment to its retail partners by announcing that, from 1
February 2009, it is maintaining commission on National Lottery draw-based
games at 5% and increasing retail commission on Scratchcard games by
20%, from 5% to 6%. With National Lottery Scratchcards
enjoying a 73% increase in sales since 2003 and now a billion-pound a year
business, the increase in commission which applies to all packs settled
on or after 1 February will be a further boost to retailers bottom
lines.
Retailers are also set to benefit from a host of new
Scratchcard games over the next few months, including the return of the
hugely-popular Deal Or No Deal (launching on 19 February with a top prize of
£250,000), the perennial favourite Solid Gold (launching on 12 March with
a top prize of £90,000) and Monopoly (launching on 2 April with a top
prize of £1 million), which, since it was first launched in 2001, has
consistently proved to be a big winner with the lottery-playing public.
In a further move to benefit retailers, Camelot is
increasing the size of its Scratchcard packs. All Scratchcard games launching
after 1 February 2009 will come in a new £160 pack size.
The bigger pack size will
ensure retailers have sufficient stock in their Scratchcard dispensers,
allowing them to capitalise on sales during peak times, such as draw days and
weekends. The new packs will also last longer, resulting in fewer empty facings
and less time spent filling the dispenser. On top of
the enhanced Scratchcard sales commission and bigger pack sizes, Camelot is
also increasing the optional prize payout limit for all retailers from
£200 to £500. This will allow retailers, at their discretion, to
pay prizes of up to £500 in store. In line with this increase, the 1%
commission that retailers previously earned on paying prizes over £10 and
up to and including £200 will be extended for payouts up to and including
£500. Martin Pugh, Commercial Director of
Camelot, said: These measures, together with the equipment, training
and marketing packages we already provide, underline our commitment to support
our retail partners to help them make the most of selling National Lottery
products. Our retailers have played a
pivotal role in helping to raise over £22 billion for the Good Causes to
date. We want to build on this amazing achievement by building an even better
and brighter National Lottery that will deliver even more money for the Good
Causes, while continuing to add value to retailers businesses and the
£3.5 billion in commission they have already earned from selling National
Lottery products. By following these simple
tips, retailers can make the most of the extra Scratchcard commission and pack
sizes and make even more of an impact on their sales:
- Make sure your Scratchcard
dispenser is highly-visible and not obstructed by clutter: most
Scratchcards are bought on impulse so having a dispenser in a prime location by
the till gives your customers the opportunity to buy one while they are waiting
to pay.
- Regularly refresh and re-fill
Scratchcard dispensers: an empty dispenser means lost sales just
like an empty shelf in your store. Customers like lots of choice so always
include a full range of £1, £2 and £5 Scratchcard games.
- Always display TV-advertised
games, such as Rich For Life and Deal Or No Deal: Camelot supports certain
games with marketing and advertising on TV, radio and in the press. These are
hugely popular and, on average, generate an extra 69% in sales.
- Excite your customers:
activate and display new Scratchcard games as soon as you receive them
and talk to your customers about them.
