Instant Games Instant ticket
lotteries appeal to those players who want to know immediately if they have
won. Instant tickets contain a series of symbols that are covered by a
secure "scratch-off" coating. Once the coating has been scratched
off, the ticket reveals on-the-spot whether the player won or lost. In
"Probability Games," every ticket is a potential winner, but the player
must scratch the correct areas to win. Massachusetts offered the first
scratch-off ticket in 1974.

Probability Game Didn't
Meet Sales Expectations LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (June 28, 2001)
-- Sales of the Kentucky Lottery's
Player's Choice probability games will conclude on June 30, 2001. Kentucky
was the first lottery to roll out probability games on a wide scale. Player's
Choice sales began in May of 2000, were suspended for a short period last
summer, then resumed in November. While this innovative product showed promise,
it did not meet sales expectations. "We essentially broke even on
Player's Choice," said Kentucky Lottery VP of Public Affairs Rick Redman.
"We didn't lose money, but the product didn't sell well enough to merit
continuing with it." Kentucky Lottery sales representatives will be
visiting the approximately 500 stores that have sold Player's Choice over the
next several weeks to collect any unsold tickets as well as the terminals used
to validate the games. "We appreciate our Kentucky Lottery retailers who
were willing to help us try this novel and innovative product," said KLC
President & CEO Arch Gleason. "Probability games are something that the
lottery industry has been studying for a number of years. We were willing to
seize the opportunity, but it didn't live up to our nor our retailers'
expectations. We may revisit it as a potential product line sometime in the
future." SOURCE: Kentucky Lottery Corp.
