Biography:
Gary C. Peters was appointed the seventh Commissioner
of the Michigan Bureau of State
Lottery by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, effective April 9, 2003.
As Lottery Commissioner, Peters serves as the bureau's
CEO and is responsible for the overall management and operation of the state
lottery. The Michigan Lottery is a $2 billion business which generates in
excess of $600 million annually for the state School Aid Fund.
Peters was a member of the Michigan Senate from 1995
to 2002. He served as Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus and Vice Chair of
the Finance, Education, Judiciary and Natural Resources Committees. He was also
a member of the Michigan Law Revision Commission and served on the Michigan
Sentencing Commission.
His work in the Senate has been recognized by numerous
state organizations. The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police named him Public
Servant of the Year and the Michigan Deputy Sheriffs Association presented him
with their Star Award. He was Michigan Sierra Club's Environmentalist of the
Year and received the Outstanding Legislator Award from the Michigan
Association of School Psychologists. The Michigan Trial Lawyers Association
awarded Peters the "Champion of Justice" Award in recognition of his efforts to
fight for justice on behalf of the people of Michigan.
Peters was a member of the Rochester Hills City
Council. He served as Vice Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee and Chair
of the Solid Waste Management Committee.
Peters was employed as Vice President -- Investments
at UBS PaineWebber, Inc. in Rochester Hills from 1989 to 2003. He was an
Assistant Vice President at Merrill Lynch, Inc. in Rochester Hills from 1980 to
1989. Peters has served on arbitration panels for the National Association of
Securities Dealers and the New York Stock Exchange.
Peters currently serves as a Lieutenant Commander and
a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist in the United States Naval Reserve. His
reserve duty included time in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Southern
Watch, and he served overseas during increased military activity following the
September 11th terrorist attacks.
Peters received a BA (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa)
in Political Science from Alma College, an MBA in finance from the University
of Detroit/Mercy and his Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law
School.
He is married to Colleen Ochoa and has three children
- Gary Jr., Madeleine and Alana.
