The Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) is a public
single regulatory body that is responsible for the governance of all forms of
gaming in Malta. All gaming that takes place in Malta is regulated by the
LGA. Accordingly the LGA is responsible for Amusement Machines, Broadcasting
Media games, Casinos, Commercial Bingo Halls, Commercial Communication games,
Horse racing, the National lottery, Non-Profit games, Remote Gaming and Video
Lottery Terminals.
The National Lottery The National
Lottery was set up as a Government monoply in 1934. Prior to February, 2004,
all National Lottery games fell under the responsibility of the Public Lotto
Department. In February, 2004 Maltco Lotteries Limited was awarded an exclusive
licence to operate all the National Lottery games. The licence is valid for
seven years. Presently Maltco is operating Super 5, Lotto Instant lottery,
U*Bet (fixed-odds betting) and Quick Keno. Maltco is expected to launch
other National Lottery games in the future. The LGA regulates the operations of
Maltco and collects gaming tax from the licensee on behalf of the Government.
